Today, July 23, in 1983, a unit conversion error caused Air Canada Flight 143 to run completely out of fuel at 41,000 feet. Ground crews loaded 22,300 pounds of fuel instead of the required 22,300 kilograms, leaving the brand-new Boeing 767 stranded mid-air with less than half the fuel it needed. With both engines dead, Captain Bob Pearson drew on his sailplane background to execute a dramatic forward slip, angling the jet broadside into the wind to shed altitude fast without picking up excessive speed. He glided the aircraft onto a decommissioned military runway in Gimli, Manitoba, saving all 61 passengers and 8 crew members without a single fatality.
