A Blood Moon is rising – and billions will see it!

On the night of September 7-8, the Moon will pass through Earth’s shadow, turning a deep crimson red in a stunning total lunar eclipse – and about 86% of the world’s population will be able to witness at least part of it. That’s more than 7 billion people with a front-row seat to one of the most widely visible lunar eclipses in modern history.

The eclipse will be fully visible from large parts of Africa, Asia, Australia, and most of Europe – about 76% of the world will see the total eclipse, while 85% will catch at least some of the total phase. If you’re in the right place with clear skies, you’ll see the Moon gradually dim and then glow a ghostly red as it enters Earth’s umbra, the darkest part of its shadow.

The total eclipse itself will last an impressive 1 hour and 22 minutes, with the full event stretching over 5 hours and 27 minutes from start to finish. The Moon will begin slipping into Earth’s outer shadow just before midnight in many parts of Asia, with totality peaking shortly after.

Observers in eastern South America, western Europe, and parts of North America will see a partial eclipse, while most of New York and the U.S. East Coast will miss it entirely due to moonset. Still, this is a truly global event – and one of the best chances this decade to see a blood moon.

Mark your calendars, check your skies, and don’t miss the spectacle.
