South Korea and Indonesia have tentatively agreed to transfer one KF-21 fighter jet prototype to Jakarta, according to a defense procurement document cited by opposition lawmaker Kang Dae-sik. The handover covers a single-seat prototype used in verification tests, including aerial refueling trials, and is valued at approximately 600 billion won ($398 million).

The transfer is contingent on Indonesia completing its full 600 billion-won contribution to the joint development program. Jakarta had originally agreed to cover around 20 percent of total project costs but negotiated a reduced share in June last year in exchange for a lower level of technology transfers.

The KF-21 joint development program is scheduled for completion in June, more than a decade after South Korea launched it in 2015. Separately, Seoul is in talks with Jakarta on a potential export deal for 16 production-model KF-21 jets, which would constitute South Korea's first overseas sale of the aircraft.

🇦🇺 Australia's Top Veteran Faces War Crime Charges

Ben Roberts-Smith, Australia's most decorated living veteran and a former Special Air Service Regiment corporal, was arrested at Sydney Airport on Tuesday. He is expected to face war crime charges alleging the murder of five unarmed Afghan nationals during deployments between 2009 and 2012.

Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett stated that the alleged victims were detained, unarmed, and under the control of Australian Defense Force members at the time of their deaths. The charges allege that victims were shot either by the accused directly or by subordinate ADF members acting on his orders.

Roberts-Smith is only the second Australian Afghanistan veteran to face such charges. The Office of the Special Investigator, which oversaw the process, noted that 53 war crime allegations had been investigated in total, with 39 concluding without charges.

Taiwan's National Security Bureau told the legislature on April 6 that Beijing is intensifying efforts to recruit talent, steal technology, and acquire controlled goods from Taiwan's AI and semiconductor industries. The bureau's legislative report stated that the goal is to obtain advanced chip manufacturing technology and circumvent international technology restrictions on China.

On espionage, the bureau reported that Beijing is using investment, business ties, and financial incentives to induce retired military personnel to approach active-duty members and extract defense and government information. From last year through March, 58 individuals were indicted in mainland-linked spy cases, of whom 32 were active or retired military personnel.

The bureau also reported that China's military cyber units continue to conduct attacks and data theft against Taiwan, using AI tools to spread disinformation at scale. A cross-agency task force has been established to monitor foreign interference in Taiwan's local elections scheduled for the second half of this year, including cross-border fund flows and deepfake content.

Prosecutors at the Bandung District Court told the court on April 7 that an Indonesian syndicate trafficked 34 babies between 2023 and 2025, at least 10 of whom were taken to Singapore and sold for up to S$18,000 per child. The 19 defendants — 18 women and one man — face a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison under Indonesia's Human Trafficking Law.

According to court documents, a Singaporean individual identified only as Petter requested that defendant Lie Siu Luan, known as Lily, source babies for adoption and arrange fake birth parents to sign Singapore's statutory adoption consent forms. Recruiters used social media and online adoption groups to locate birth mothers, offering payments of between nine million and 15 million rupiah per child.

Adoption papers for at least 10 babies were prepared using forged birth certificates and fake identities, and five defendants entered Singapore posing as birth parents or guardians. Singapore's Ministry of Social and Family Development stated in February that it was coordinating with Indonesian authorities and would review inter-country adoption processes once the facts of the case were established.

North Korea launched short-range ballistic missiles from the Wonsan area on two separate occasions on April 8, according to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff. The first launch at around 8:50 a.m. sent missiles approximately 240 kilometers before they fell into the sea; a second launch at around 2:20 p.m. produced a missile that flew over 700 kilometers.

Victor Cha, Korea chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said at the Asan Plenum forum that South Korea seeking an Iran-granted transit exemption for its vessels through the Strait of Hormuz could prompt the Trump administration to impose additional punitive tariffs on Seoul.

A CSIS report found that most stranded South Korean ships would remain blocked even with an Iranian exemption, as the majority have US or Saudi ownership links. Two former and current US policy figures have assessed at an Asan Institute forum in Seoul that a Trump-Kim summit is likely to occur this autumn. Fred Fleitz, former chief of staff of the National Security Council and vice chair of the America First Policy Institute, stated he believes there is a good chance of such a meeting, citing Trump's repeated signals of interest in resuming personal diplomacy with Kim Jong-un.

Fleitz added that any re-engagement would not entail a retreat from the US demand for denuclearization. He also stated that North Korea halting its weapons transfers to Russia for use in Ukraine should be an additional condition the Trump administration pushes for in talks.

Victor Cha, Korea chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, put the probability of a Trump-Kim meeting at above 50 percent, contingent on it occurring after a Trump-Xi summit in Beijing.
