🇵🇰🇨🇳 Pakistan Eyes RMB Bonds, Listings in Hong Kong

Pakistan's consul general in Hong Kong, Riaz Ahmed Shaikh, has stated that Pakistani institutions are preparing to issue renminbi-denominated bonds in the city. Pakistani firms are also considering using Hong Kong as an offshore RMB hub to invest in yuan-linked financial products and adopt the currency for trade settlement.

According to People's Bank of China data, RMB settlement in China-Pakistan goods trade reached 19.4 billion yuan in 2024, accounting for 23% of total bilateral trade volume. Shaikh noted that Hong Kong could play a key role in financing projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor as it enters a second phase focused on corporate development.

At least one major Pakistani company is considering a primary or secondary listing in Hong Kong, though the Hong Kong Stock Exchange does not currently recognize the Pakistan Stock Exchange as a qualifying bourse. Pakistani firms would first need to list on an approved exchange before becoming eligible for a secondary listing in Hong Kong.

🇰🇷 Prosecutors Seek Ten Years for Yoon

Special counsel Cho Eun-suk's team demanded a 10-year prison term for former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol at the Seoul High Court appeals hearing on Monday. The sentence sought is double the five-year term a lower court imposed in January.

Yoon was convicted in the lower court of obstructing investigators attempting to detain him and of convening only select Cabinet members to review his martial law plan. He was also found guilty of creating and then discarding a false proclamation after the martial law decree was lifted in December 2024.

The special counsel team argued Yoon abused his presidential position to destroy constitutional order and had not apologized since the first ruling. The court is expected to deliver its verdict before the end of June. Yoon has been jailed since July and is standing a total of eight trials, including a separate case in which he was sentenced in February to life imprisonment for insurrection.

🇱🇰 Sri Lanka Raises Cooking Gas Prices 23%

Sri Lanka raised liquefied petroleum gas prices on April 6, citing higher global prices driven by the Iran war. State-owned Litro Gas, the main domestic LPG supplier, increased the price of a 12.5kg refill from 3,990 rupees to 4,765 rupees, a rise of 19.42 per cent.

A private supplier holding roughly a quarter of the domestic market raised its retail price by 23 per cent to 5,700 rupees. A Litro spokesperson attributed the revision to higher global LPG prices and increased shipping costs, and confirmed supplies sufficient for the entire month of April.

The April increase follows an eight per cent hike in March, when Sri Lanka also raised fuel and electricity prices by more than a third. Sri Lanka's government has previously stated that a prolonged conflict in the Middle East could undermine the country's recovery from its 2022 economic crisis, noting that the Strait of Hormuz has been effectively closed since the conflict began.

🇮🇩 Batam Immigration Officials Reassigned Over Tourist Extortion

Indonesia's newly appointed immigration director-general Hendarsam Marantoko has reassigned five officials from the Batam Immigration Office, placing them under a three-month investigation at the Internal Compliance Directorate. The move follows illegal levy practices at the Batam Center International Ferry Terminal targeting Singaporean and Myanmar passport holders on March 13 and 14.

The reassigned officials include Batam Immigration Office head Hajar Aswad and four others, among them immigration analyst Javier Saviola, identified as the officer who allegedly requested $300 from a Myanmar passport holder through a broker, with the final payment settling at $250. Hendarsam was installed as director-general on April 1 by Immigration and Corrections Minister Agus Andrianto.

Internal Compliance Directorate official Washington Napitupulu stated that severe disciplinary punishment under Government Regulation No. 94/2021 could include dismissal, and that the case may be referred to police for alleged extortion and gratification if sufficient evidence is gathered. Officer Javier Saviola is also to be sent to Nusakambangan Island for a special development programme.

🇨🇳🇺🇸 Southeast Asia Shifts Toward China in Poll

The ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute survey of 2,008 respondents across 11 ASEAN members found that 52 percent would choose China as a strategic partner over the US if forced to align with one. The previous year's result was reversed: 52.3 percent had preferred the US in the prior edition of the annual poll.

Support for China was stronger in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Singapore, while the Philippines, Myanmar, and Vietnam retained a preference for the US. The survey was conducted between January 5 and February 20, 2026, a period that coincided with several early moves by the Trump administration on tariffs and foreign policy.

Analysts at an online panel on the findings cautioned against treating the result as a binary shift. A former US diplomat advising BowerGroupAsia noted that reduced confidence in the US does not automatically benefit China, as Southeast Asian states are also deepening ties with Japan, South Korea, India, Australia, and Europe.

🇯🇵🇨🇳 China Objects to Japan Easing Arms Exports

Japan's government under Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae is moving to relax restrictions on weapons exports. The draft proposal would allow lethal weapons exports in principle, with the National Security Council reviewing each case before notifying parliament. Japan's government plans to revise its defense equipment transfer principles and their operational guidelines within the month.

The ruling Liberal Democratic Party's Security Research Council held a meeting on April 6 at party headquarters, where the government presented the draft. Attendees reported no significant opposition, and the government intends to submit the proposal to a plenary session as early as the following week.

China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning, at a regular press briefing on April 7, said China had serious concerns about the move. She stated that Japan's accelerating remilitarization posed a threat to regional peace and stability, and urged Japan to honor its commitments in the military and security domain and act with caution.

🇹🇼🇨🇳 KMT Chair Begins Six-Day Mainland China Visit

Kuomintang chairwoman Cheng Li-wun arrived in Shanghai on Tuesday leading a 14-member delegation on a six-day visit to mainland China. The trip includes three KMT vice-chairmen and is expected to culminate in a meeting with Communist Party leader Xi Jinping.

Cheng described the visit as a "journey of peace" and called for dialogue between both sides of the strait to resolve differences. She stated that preserving peace is preserving Taiwan.

Lawmakers from the ruling Democratic Progressive Party raised concerns over what would be discussed, warning that KMT exchanges with Beijing could not be monitored. Taiwan's Premier Cho Jung-tai called for greater scrutiny of politically influential figures dealing with the Communist Party.

🇰🇷🇮🇩 Seoul Eyes KF-21 Prototype Transfer to Jakarta

South Korea and Indonesia have tentatively agreed to transfer one KF-21 fighter jet prototype to Jakarta, according to a defense procurement document cited by opposition lawmaker Kang Dae-sik. The handover covers a single-seat prototype used in verification tests, including aerial refueling trials, and is valued at approximately 600 billion won ($398 million).

The transfer is contingent on Indonesia completing its full 600 billion-won contribution to the joint development program. Jakarta had originally agreed to cover around 20 percent of total project costs but negotiated a reduced share in June last year in exchange for a lower level of technology transfers.

The KF-21 joint development program is scheduled for completion in June, more than a decade after South Korea launched it in 2015. Separately, Seoul is in talks with Jakarta on a potential export deal for 16 production-model KF-21 jets, which would constitute South Korea's first overseas sale of the aircraft.

🇦🇺 Australia's Top Veteran Faces War Crime Charges

Ben Roberts-Smith, Australia's most decorated living veteran and a former Special Air Service Regiment corporal, was arrested at Sydney Airport on Tuesday. He is expected to face war crime charges alleging the murder of five unarmed Afghan nationals during deployments between 2009 and 2012.

Australian Federal Police Commissioner Krissy Barrett stated that the alleged victims were detained, unarmed, and under the control of Australian Defense Force members at the time of their deaths. The charges allege that victims were shot either by the accused directly or by subordinate ADF members acting on his orders.

Roberts-Smith is only the second Australian Afghanistan veteran to face such charges. The Office of the Special Investigator, which oversaw the process, noted that 53 war crime allegations had been investigated in total, with 39 concluding without charges.

🇹🇼🇨🇳 Taiwan Bureau Warns on Chip Technology Theft

Taiwan's National Security Bureau told the legislature on April 6 that Beijing is intensifying efforts to recruit talent, steal technology, and acquire controlled goods from Taiwan's AI and semiconductor industries. The bureau's legislative report stated that the goal is to obtain advanced chip manufacturing technology and circumvent international technology restrictions on China.

On espionage, the bureau reported that Beijing is using investment, business ties, and financial incentives to induce retired military personnel to approach active-duty members and extract defense and government information. From last year through March, 58 individuals were indicted in mainland-linked spy cases, of whom 32 were active or retired military personnel.

The bureau also reported that China's military cyber units continue to conduct attacks and data theft against Taiwan, using AI tools to spread disinformation at scale. A cross-agency task force has been established to monitor foreign interference in Taiwan's local elections scheduled for the second half of this year, including cross-border fund flows and deepfake content.

🇮🇩🇸🇬 Indonesia Syndicate Sold 34 Babies to Singapore

Prosecutors at the Bandung District Court told the court on April 7 that an Indonesian syndicate trafficked 34 babies between 2023 and 2025, at least 10 of whom were taken to Singapore and sold for up to S$18,000 per child. The 19 defendants — 18 women and one man — face a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison under Indonesia's Human Trafficking Law.

According to court documents, a Singaporean individual identified only as Petter requested that defendant Lie Siu Luan, known as Lily, source babies for adoption and arrange fake birth parents to sign Singapore's statutory adoption consent forms. Recruiters used social media and online adoption groups to locate birth mothers, offering payments of between nine million and 15 million rupiah per child.

Adoption papers for at least 10 babies were prepared using forged birth certificates and fake identities, and five defendants entered Singapore posing as birth parents or guardians. Singapore's Ministry of Social and Family Development stated in February that it was coordinating with Indonesian authorities and would review inter-country adoption processes once the facts of the case were established.

🇲🇾 Daim's Daughter Pleads Not Guilty in Malaysia

Asnida Abdul Daim appeared before Sessions Court Judge Rosli Ahmad in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday and pleaded not guilty to a charge of submitting an incomplete asset declaration to Malaysia's Anti-Corruption Commission. The MACC alleges she failed to declare shareholdings in five companies when responding to a formal notice in December 2023.

The charge carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a fine of up to 100,000 ringgit. The court granted bail at 50,000 ringgit, ordered Asnida to surrender her passport, and set May 21 for the next hearing.

The case is part of the MACC's broader "Op Godfather" investigation into assets linked to her late father, former finance minister Daim Zainuddin, his family, and associates. Separately, two of Daim's sons and a family associate failed to appear before MACC investigators, prompting the agency to say it would seek Interpol red notices against them.

🇵🇰🇨🇳 Hormuz Blockade Drives Pakistan Electric Bike Surge

Iran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz following U.S. and Israeli strikes in late February sent fuel costs sharply higher in Pakistan, where nearly all oil imports pass through that route. A retailer in Rawalpindi reported a 70% jump in March sales of converted electric bikes, while a seven-year-old franchise recorded its steepest sales surge to date.

Electric two-wheelers exceeded 10% of monthly two-wheeler sales for the first time in 2026, up from roughly 5% of annual sales in 2025. Pakistan's government PAVE subsidy scheme, which covers one-fifth of an electric bike's price and offers interest-free loans for the remainder, had received approximately 270,000 applications by early April — nearly seven times the first-phase target through June.

Chinese brands including Yadea, Jinpeng, AIMA, and Sunra account for the bulk of supply, while BYD has partnered with Pakistan's HUBCO Green to build charging stations nationally. An analyst at Renewables First identified weak after-sales infrastructure and limited charging networks as the primary risks to sustained adoption.

🇨🇳🇰🇵 Wang Yi to Visit North Korea April 9–10

China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi is scheduled to visit North Korea on April 9–10, according to China's Foreign Ministry. The last publicly known visit by Wang in that capacity was in late 2019.

Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that China aims to strengthen strategic communication with North Korea and enhance exchanges and cooperation. She described the visit as an important move to advance bilateral ties.

The visit follows a series of steps to restore links between the two countries, including the resumption of Beijing–Pyongyang passenger train service in March and Air China restarting flights between the two capitals. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing in September, and Premier Li Qiang visited Pyongyang in October.

🇰🇵🇰🇷 North Korea Fires Missiles Twice in One Day

North Korea launched short-range ballistic missiles from the Wonsan area on two separate occasions on April 8, according to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff. The first launch at around 8:50 a.m. sent missiles approximately 240 kilometers before they fell into the sea; a second launch at around 2:20 p.m. produced a missile that flew over 700 kilometers.

The back-to-back launches marked North Korea's fifth confirmed ballistic missile launch of the year. North Korea's first vice foreign minister, Jang Kum-chol, stated that recent signals from Pyongyang constitute a clear warning to Seoul, describing South Korea as the North's most hostile state.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff said it is sharing information with the United States and maintaining a posture to respond to any provocation. US Forces Korea stated that the launches do not pose an immediate threat to US personnel, territory, or allies, and that it is consulting with allied partners.

🇰🇷🇮🇷 Seoul Seeks Hormuz Passage After US-Iran Ceasefire

Cheong Wa Dae stated it would do its best to ensure South Korean vessels can pass through the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible. A presidential office official said the exact method and conditions for passage are being determined through communication with relevant countries, taking into account limitations outlined by Iran.

US President Donald Trump announced a two-week suspension of strikes on Iran, subject to Tehran agreeing to the complete and immediate reopening of the strait. Iran's Armed Forces subsequently indicated that safe passage would be possible for two weeks, subject to coordination and technical limitations.

More than 60 percent of South Korea's crude oil imports are delivered through the Strait of Hormuz, making the waterway a critical supply route for the country's energy sector.

🇰🇷🇺🇸 Seoul Faces Tariff Risk Over Hormuz Exemption

Victor Cha, Korea chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said at the Asan Plenum forum that South Korea seeking an Iran-granted transit exemption for its vessels through the Strait of Hormuz could prompt the Trump administration to impose additional punitive tariffs on Seoul.

A CSIS report found that most stranded South Korean ships would remain blocked even with an Iranian exemption, as the majority have US or Saudi ownership links. South Korea's government-only oil reserves stand at 77.6 million barrels, covering approximately 26 days of supply following a contribution to the International Energy Agency's emergency release.

Cha assessed that South Korea is unlikely to pursue a direct arrangement with Iran given ongoing trade and security negotiations with Washington. He indicated Seoul would more probably monitor Japan's decisions on the matter and align its response accordingly.

🇺🇸🇰🇵 Analysts See Trump-Kim Summit This Fall

Two former and current US policy figures have assessed at an Asan Institute forum in Seoul that a Trump-Kim summit is likely to occur this autumn. Fred Fleitz, former chief of staff of the National Security Council and vice chair of the America First Policy Institute, stated he believes there is a good chance of such a meeting, citing Trump's repeated signals of interest in resuming personal diplomacy with Kim Jong-un.

Fleitz added that any re-engagement would not entail a retreat from the US demand for denuclearization. He also stated that North Korea halting its weapons transfers to Russia for use in Ukraine should be an additional condition the Trump administration pushes for in talks.

Victor Cha, Korea chair at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, put the probability of a Trump-Kim meeting at above 50 percent, contingent on it occurring after a Trump-Xi summit in Beijing. Cha noted that China's President Xi Jinping would be unlikely to want a Trump-Kim meeting to take place before his own summit with Trump.
