What's people's opinions on people saying they "turned" asexual?

My teacher was telling a story about a breakup he had when he was a teen and talked about how after the breakup he was really sad. He was also upset saying stuff like he swore off dating girls and he wasn't gay but would turn asexual.

It made me kinda uncomfortable because you can't just turn asexual.
