So asexuality came up while watching Project Runway...

My parents and I were watching project runway when they started debating Tim Gunn's sexuality. I chimed in and said he'd talked about always being somewhat asexual. And that set my dad off. Everything from claiming it was a stupid thing so people could be "different" to comparing it to pedophilia and bestiality.

I'm pretty numb and think I'll just cry in my bed tonight. Sounds like I won't be coming out ever.

reddit conventional "wisdom" on asexuality

On other subs, when a thread OP/submitter suggests they may be asexual, these are the kinds of replies they usually get. It's a rare thread that doesn't go this way.

The reddit conventional "wisdom" is that 1) asexuality doesn't exist, 2) your condition is due to trauma or mental illness or internalized misogyny/misandry, 3) you should find a psychologist who can diagnose and treat you, 4) if a psychologist doesn't identify any trauma or mental illness, you need to keep trying different psychologists until one does, no matter the cost--it's not as if redditors will foot the bill.

Also 5) you're a lesbian even though you're not sexually attracted to women / gay even though you're not attracted to men.

6) don't give up!!! Because considering an asexual-spectrum orientation is considered "giving up" according to reddit.

Bonus: 7) you're repressed due to a religious background (because all religions are sexually repressive according to reddit). 8) "It's okay to be a sexual being! You just need to open up!"

9) "I used to think I was asexual, too, but anti-depressants cured my asexuality" but also 10) "My anti-depressants kill my sex drive and make me asexual". I've even seen one discussion a few years ago in which someone who had never been diagnosed with depression, and who wasn't prescribed anti-depressants, was told to buy anti-depressants from friends to see if it would fix their asexuality.

I've seen discussions that didn't go this way, but they're rare.
