Our standards for representation are way too low

I'm seeing a lot of talk about representation on this sub, and in the comments there's always people recommending shows with characters that they see as ace, and I just wanted to rant about it, cos that's not representation and its making me sad that that's what we have to settle for.

Firstly, of course characters from shows aimed at kids are asexual. They all are. It would be pretty inappropriate if spongebob turned around and admitted to having sexual feelings for squidward. That's not good representation, we shouldn't have to turn to fucking cbeebies to find a character we can somewhat relate to. Of course there's noting wrong with that, but a big part of being ace (for me at least) is how different our experiences are compared to the world around us. We deserve characters that can reflect those experiences, not just so we can relate to them but also to help us educate others and explain our side of things. The only character I've seen do this well is todd from bojack horseman. That's it. One comic relief character that doesn't even come out until halfway through the show. (to be fair tod is a great character that does a lot right, I'm just angry that he's basicly all we have)

On the topic of spongebob, characters being confirmed to be ace outside of the show is not good representation. In my opinion, the creators word means nothing more than any other fans until its said outright in the work. Dumbledoor being "confirmed" to be gay on twitter wasn't good enough, so why should we settle for the same thing? Allistor isn't ace until its said in the show, which could definitely happen considering the show isnt even out yet, but until then there's nothing to praise yet.

The anime recommendations are fine. I've got nothing against them and nothing much to say. Just that the characters that are apparently ace are never properly confirmed as such and they hardly ever depict realistic ace experiences. But I can really falt them for that since anime in general tends to be less on the nose and is instead ment to be looked into and interpreted by the viewer a bit more.

Thats it. rant over, would love to hear your opinions on this:)

Acephobia in the lgbt community

Tw: SA and acephobia

I am so sick of people saying asexuals don’t experience discrimination.

It’s not a hard concept to understand. 99% of the population experience sexual attraction. We are a minority and are treated as such.

The amount of trauma I could have avoided if asexuality was treated as important as the other lgbt identities. The amount of “testing my sexuality” I could have avoided if I just heard “hey, youre not broken. You’re just asexual”. Acephobic people minimize those in the community that have experienced corrective assault.

I should be able to go into lgbt spaces and say “ ya know, being ace is hard” without feeling like theres judgement.

I’m panromantic, but I hate the heteroromantic hate. Even if your straight passing, navigating a world filled with sex as an asexual is rough.

Most wholesome "you haven't met the right person yet" when coming out.

So I came out to my mum today and when she said the usual line I was ready to justify myself.

But when she started to explain how she never understood all her other friends were getting in relationships and not understanding why everyone wanted to be so physical with each other . That her only relationship before 18 was because she felt like she ought to.

She accidentally ended up with my dad when she was 20 and she said they just clicked and she couldn't quite explain it.

After a little discussion when I explained that asexuals can be in relationships and a bit more about my experiences.

She said "Then maybe you're like me"

So I think my mum just came out to me tonight as well .
