📣 Robot sorter with human touch: a new level of waste recycling♻️🔋
A new robotic system that imitates the human sense of touch has achieved an accuracy of 98.85% in recognizing household waste. These robots are already working in 40 of the 600 recycling centers in the United States, sorting waste twice as quickly and accurately as humans.
A research team from Tsinghua University in Beijing created a multilayer sensor that is sensitive to materials and temperature changes and combined it with a cascade classification algorithm. This allows the robot to effectively distinguish objects from simple (empty boxes) to complex (orange peels, scraps of fabric).
The robotic arm recognizes and sorts various types of waste: cardboard boxes, scraps, plastic bags, bottles, sponges, napkins and expired medications. Garbage is separated into containers for recycling, food waste, hazardous waste and other household waste.
