Project: Airport
Site: Abusera, South of Addis Abeba in Bishoftu, Oromia region, Ethiopia
Design-Build: Led by Dar Al-Handasah Consultants, Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA), Pascall+Watson.
Other Teams:
- Technical & financial advisors- KPMG
- Legal advisors: Clyde & Co
Supporter: African Development Bank (AfDB) as the appointed Initial Mandated Lead Arranger (IMLA) which said (last August) it would lend $500 million & lead efforts to raise $8.7 billion.
Budget: $12.5 billion
Record Claim: 'Africa's biggest airport'
Plane parking capacity: 270 planes
Passengers capacity: 110 million passengers/year which is more than 4× the capacity of Bole International airport.

We're catching up with our 2025 ICOMOS/Modernism Week Preservation Intern, Bisrat Engida.
Bisrat is now serving as Project Manager for the Lalibela Protection, Restoration and Development Project in Ethiopia, home to the extraordinary 11 rock-hewn churches carved more than 800 years ago and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1978.
“Despite their very different contexts, both Lalibela and Fallingwater share World Heritage status for their Outstanding Universal Value,” Bisrat says, reflecting on how his experience as an ICOMOS/Modernism Week Preservation Intern at Fallingwater helped shape his work today.
