Hi all, I wanted to started sharing information on the snowpack I’m gathering as I spend time in the mountains.
This is a snow pit I dug yesterday north of ANZOB just above the usual parking area. There was clear faceting near the ground, and in this particular spot wind had created a strong cohesive slab. As I walked over the spot the slab fractured and propagated about 5-10m in either direction. This isn’t representative of the whole area but I expect most windloaded areas in the snowpack to be highly susceptible to slab avalanches. Be careful out there!

Hello again! Here are some observations from Friday in the backcountry behind Safed Dara. They are getting snow up high, but stability is still very low! We dug one pit, but observed a very similar snowpack through the observed area. We saw and heard quite a bit of whumphing, collapsing and cracking during our uptrack, and on our very cautious decent observed numerous small avalanches. roughly the top 25cm of snow was propagating on nearly every slope steep enough to slide, though for the most part stopped in the middle of the slide path (ie didnt run very far).
I havnt made any observations since this last storm, but it seems we got a significant amount of new heavy snow. This new snow will ikely be unstable, I would expect lots of natural slides, but it may also serve to smoosh down some of those weak layers! We will see what begins to happen in the coming week.
