🚨 Massive Cyberattack on India’s Independence Day

On 15 August 2025, as India celebrated its Independence Day, a wave of cyberattacks strucked them. More than 80 websites were hacked and defaced in a coordinated operation by the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), alongside the NSCN-K (YA).

The attackers used the breaches to spread messages calling for a boycott of Independence Day, displaying images of burning Indian flags, and declaring 15 August as a “Black Day.”

Key Targets

Some of the most notable domains compromised included:

mgcl.edu.in – Mahatma Gandhi Law College

sainathcollege.org.in – Sainath College

vidyavaticollege.org – Vidyavati College

nchs-gwalior.edu.in – Nursing College, Gwalior

drrkcollege.org.in – Dr. Radhakrishnan College

These intrusions not only defaced the sites but also raised concerns about student data leaks and highlighted vulnerabilities in India’s educational IT infrastructure.

Television Channels Hijacked

The impact was not limited to websites. Attackers also infiltrated regional television broadcasts, with channels like JTV Classic and JTV Bangla briefly hijacked to display boycott messages.

ULFA’s Role and Ideology

The United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), founded in 1979, is a separatist group whose ideology centers on Assamese nationalism. The group demands an independent Assam, arguing that the region’s identity and resources are exploited by the Indian state.

By turning to cyber warfare, ULFA — with support from groups like NSCN-K (YA) — has shifted its tactics from traditional insurgency to symbolic digital disruption, aiming to embarrass India on a day of national pride.
