#BurkinaFaso's military headquarters said Monday that two soldiers were killed in an attack on a military detachment in northern Burkina Faso and 15 suspected jihadists "neutralised" in a counter-offensive.

"The soldiers of the Kelbo detachment, Soum province, Sahel region, repelled a terrorist attack that targeted their base on Monday morning with shellfire", the army said, adding that "two soldiers were killed and nine wounded in the fighting".

According to the army, the response "of the elements of the detachment routed the attackers" and "air support was deployed to intercept the group of attackers who were trying to escape".

"At least 15 terrorists were neutralised," the statement added. https://www.africanews.com/2022/07/26/2-burkinabe-soldiers-killed-and-15-suspected-jihadists-neutralized-in-attack-on-military-d/

The Armed Forces reported that the target was jihadists on the border with Togo.
An attack on a military unit in #BurkinaFaso’s jihadist-hit north has killed eight soldiers, the army said Wednesday.

The unit “was ambushed” 11 kilometers (seven miles) from Oursi in Oudalan province in the Sahel region on Tuesday, the army said in a statement.

“In the face of heavy enemy fire… eight soldiers unfortunately lost their lives during the fighting and a dozen others were injured,” it said.

The army added “41 terrorists” were killed in the military’s response.

The unit was targeted in the same area where two soldiers died Monday.

Earlier on Wednesday, security sources gave a toll of seven.

“The wounded, some of them seriously, have been evacuated. Reinforcements have been deployed in the area,” one of the sources said.

The attack was the fourth in less than 10 days in northern Burkina Faso.

The landlocked African state is in the grip of a seven-year-old insurgency that has claimed thousands of lives and forced nearly two million people to leave their homes.

On Monday, two soldiers died and a dozen “terrorists” were killed during an attack against a military detachment.

Earlier this month, at least 35 civilians were killed and 37 wounded when an improvised explosive device (IED) blast struck a convoy carrying supplies between Djibo and Bourzanga.

The following day, at least nine people, seven civilians, and two soldiers, were killed in two separate attacks by suspected jihadists.

Burkina’s ruling junta, which seized power in January, has declared the fight against the insurgency a top priority.

Eleven soldiers have been found dead and about 50 civilians are missing after an attack by Islamist militants on a 150-vehicle convoy taking supplies to a town in northern #BurkinaFaso on Monday, the government said on Tuesday.

Twenty-eight people were wounded in the attack, including 20 soldiers, said the statement by government spokesman Lionel Bilgo. The army had said in a previous statement that dozens of trucks were destroyed.

The assault took place in the commune of Gaskinde in Soum province, where jihadists linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State have escalated attacks and seized territory since 2015.

Militants have blockaded several areas, so government convoys and air drops have delivered essential goods to trapped civilians.

The convoy, which was under military escort, was carrying supplies to the town of Djibo, just over 20 km (12 miles) away from Gaskinde.
The military junta, which took power last January through a coup, has managed to overthrow the current president of #BurkinaFaso.
