(CNN) -- President Joe Biden in a letter to Congress on Wednesday said that he will officially rescind #Afghanistan's designation as a major non?#NATO ally. In a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the President wrote: "In accordance with section 517 of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961, as amended (22 U.S.C. 2321k), I am providing notice of my intent to rescind the designation of Afghanistan as a Major Non?NATO Ally."
In 2012, the United States named Afghanistan a major non-NATO ally, which cleared the way for the two countries to maintain a defense and economic relationship. Then-US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced the designation during a visit to Kabul.
Unlike NATO allies of the United States, who are bound together by a joint defense pact, there is no mutual defense guarantee as a non-NATO ally. These allies are eligible to receive material and supply loans, as well as serve as a location for US-owned war reserve stockpiles. Additionally, private companies from the designated country can bid on contracts to maintain, repair or overhaul US military equipment overseas.
The ally status had made Afghanistan eligible to receive military training and assistance, including expediting the sale and leasing of military equipment even after NATO troops left the country.
With Afghanistan's status rescinded, the US will have 18 major non-NATO allies, according to the State Department. They are: Argentina, Australia, Bahrain, Brazil, Colombia, Egypt, Israel, Japan, Jordan, Kuwait, Morocco, New Zealand, Pakistan, the Philippines, Qatar, South Korea, Thailand and Tunisia.

The spokesperson of the Chinese Foreign Ministry has called for an international investigation into US and British war crimes in #Afghanistan, #Iraq and #Syria.
Top Russian official claimed that the number of members of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group in #Afghanistan has tripled to 6,000 since the Taliban's takeover in August 2021. "As far as we understand, their (IS) approximate estimated number has reached 6,000. Before the Taliban's takeover, their number was about 2,000. That is approximately a threefold increase," stated Zamir Kabulov, the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry's Second Asian Department, at a press conference on Thursday, Sputnik reported.
He further stated that this is the most negative aspect of how the Afghan situation has turned during the Taliban's rule, as IS continues its efforts to destabilise not only Afghanistan but also its neighbours. According to reports, the Islamic group has been engaged in conflict with the IS in various regions ever since the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan. Further, Armed groups affiliated with the Islamic State in Afghanistan have carried out attacks against Afghan Shias, Sufis, and other ethnic groups, killing and injuring many of them.
Russia calls for release of Afghanistan's frozen assets
It is to be noted here that the Russian government has also stressed the necessity to release the war-ravaged country's assets "illegally" held by the United States. Addressing a press conference, Russian Foreign Ministry Deputy Spokesperson, Ivan Nechaev stated Moscow has often emphasised the importance of releasing frozen assets of Afghanistan. He further claimed that attempts by the international community to stabilise the situation in Afghanistan are being hampered owing to the 'illegal seizure' of funds by the United States and "European minions," TASS reported.

In an interview with Al-Jazeera, the presenter asked Taliban spokesman Muhammad Naeem Wardak whether the new regime in Kabul is ready to deal with Israel if they want to deal with everyone. To this, Wardak replied that the Taliban see no obstacles for this, since they have no problems with Israel.
He also added that he should not be asked about problems that are not related to Afghanistan, and therefore not of interest to the Taliban. Thus, emphasizing that the Taliban is not interested in the problem of Palestine, but whether Israel is interested in establishing diplomatic relations with the new Afghan regime is another matter.
