Islamic State reports attacks in #Mali and #Benin in which more than 100 people have been killed, including Russian mercenaries

The Islamists attacked for the first time in Benin, a country located on the border with Niger, where on two occasions, in July and September, local soldiers were attacked on a section of the road between the cities of Kandy and Malanville, Alibori region, during which 6 soldiers died.

In addition, IS has claimed responsibility for major attacks, on the Malian army base in Tessit and in the town of Talataye. The first occurred on August 8 and 42 soldiers of the Malian Armed Forces became its victims, and the military facility was looted and set on fire. The second occurred recently and its victims were JNIM militants and militiamen from Azawad, among them a total of 60 people died, and the rest fled despite the support of the Malian Air Force.
The Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for the first time for an attack in northern #Benin, carried out by its branch in the Sahel, confirming the extension of its activities to the Gulf of Guinea.

“The soldiers of the caliphate announce the expansion of their operations in Benin”, affirmed the EI member, the weekly Al-Naba, quoted this Friday, September 15 by the American center for monitoring jihadist sites SITE.

According to Al-Naba, in early July, the jihadists "attacked a military patrol in the village of Takwara, in the Alibori region (northern Benin)" and allegedly killed four of them. The next day, an "ambush" of soldiers in the same region this time would have killed two people.

This is the first time that the Sahelian branch of IS has claimed activities in Benin. The group as well as its great rival Al-Qaeda have been increasing deadly attacks in the Sahel for years, particularly in northern Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso. But their desire to extend their activities to the Gulf of Guinea (Ghana, Benin, Togo, Côte d'Ivoire in particular) has been proven for many months and is mentioned by both African states and France.
