#Turkey’s top diplomat has pledged to assist the Syrian government in efforts to oust Kurdish fighters based in the country’s northeast, regarded as “terrorists” by Ankara, despite a recent spike in tensions after Turkey made good on threats to take military action on its own.

Speaking to Turkish broadcaster TV100 for an interview on Wednesday, Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said his country is prepared to work alongside Damascus against Kurdish militants fighting under the banner of the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces [SDF].

“We will give all kinds of political support to the work of the [Syrian] regime in this regard. It is the most natural right of the regime to clear a terrorist organization in its own territory,” the FM said of the SDF, which is present in Syria’s northeastern extremity.

Cavusoglu went on to say that Turkey had also reached out to Iran on the matter, as the Islamic Republic has long fought in support of the Syrian government against rebels and jihadist groups during the country’s decade-long civil war.

#Turkey has condemned Israeli military operations in Gaza, urging for de-escalation amid an exchange of IDF airstrikes and rocket fire from Palestinian militants. Washington, meanwhile, has voiced full support for the Jewish state.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry said it “strongly” condemned the Israeli airstrikes on Friday, calling for “restraint and common sense” while stressing the need “to immediately end these events before they turn into a new conflict.”

“We find it unacceptable that civilians, including children, lost their lives in attacks,” the ministry said, adding, “We are deeply concerned about the rising tension in the region after the attacks.”

The comments came after Israel opened a new offensive on Gaza earlier on Friday, ‘Operation Breaking Dawn’, which commenced with airstrikes on an apartment building and allegedly killed a senior commander in the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), a Gaza-based militant group. Israel’s military said it targeted up to 20 additional PIJ fighters, while the Palestinian authorities reported at least 10 noncombatants killed, including a five-year-old girl.

In the early hours of Saturday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said it bombed other PIJ sites in Gaza used “for the production of explosives,” as well as several PIJ “rocket launchers,” sharing footage of some of the sorties.

Ahead of a call between Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz and his American counterpart, Lloyd Austin, Washington’s envoy to Israel, Tom Nides, declared that “the United States firmly believes that Israel has a right to protect itself,” though he added that officials were “engaging with different parties and urge all sides for calm.”

The United Nations, meanwhile, voiced “deep concern” over the renewed hostilities, triggering outrage from Israel’s UN ambassador, Gilad Erdan, who blasted the international body for making “false immoral comparisons” between Israeli forces and Palestinian “terrorists.”

#Turkey accuses #Greece of moving weapons to islands without military status

According to Turkish security sources, the note points out, these actions constitute a violation of international law. They also underlined Turkey's efforts to resolve the issues through dialogue and under international law.

“That Greece doesn't even attend the meetings despite the invitations and makes such provocations shows who is raising the tension,” stressed the security sources, quoted by the agency.

Greece and Turkey, countries that make up the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), were on several occasions on the verge of an armed confrontation due to their territorial disputes.

A new wave of tension was unleashed on August 23, when Greek anti-aircraft batteries, according to data from the Turkish Defense Ministry, aimed their missiles at two Turkish warplanes. Greece, for its part, denies it. The Turkish authorities have warned Greece that it will pay a very high price if it goes further. The Turkish Defense Minister, Hulusi Akar, asked NATO to show objectivity in relation to what happened.
#Turkey on Monday summoned the #Greek ambassador to Ankara while urging an end to what it is calling violations on Aegean islands and the restoration their non-military status, state-run Anadolu news agency reported, citing the Foreign Ministry.

Turkey and Greece have for decades been at odds over a string of issues, including sea boundaries. The latest bout of tensions between the neighbouring countries was sparked by Ankara accusing Athens of arming islands in the Aegean Sea that have a demilitarized status, a claim Athens rejects.
