The US take a view on possibility of deploying weapons of mass destruction in #Poland
Previously, the Polish president revealed that his country held talks with Washington about it.
The deputy spokesman for the US Department of State, Vedant Patel, said Thursday that his country will not deploy nuclear weapons in Poland, after Polish President Andrzej Duda revealed that his country held talks with Washington about it.
"I can say that the United States has no plans to deploy a nuclear weapon in a NATO member territory that has joined after 1997," the spokesman told a news conference when asked about Duda's remarks.
Patel called Warsaw an "important NATO ally in the region" but said he is not aware that this particular issue is being raised.
Previously, the Polish president, in an interview with Gazeta Polska, stressed that "there is always a potential possibility of participating in the nuclear sharing program", which allows some NATO member countries, which do not have nuclear weapons of their own, to obtain them, deploy them and use them if necessary.
"We have spoken with US leaders about whether the US is considering this possibility. The issue is open," he added.
Currently the member states of Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey host US nuclear weapons as part of NATO's nuclear sharing programme.

#Poland remains interested in ensuring the permanent presence of NATO troops and the deployment of U.S. weapons of mass destruction on its territory, Jakub Kumoch, adviser to President Andrzej Duda, said on Friday, confirming "conceptual" negotiations on those weapons.
Duda made headlines earlier this month by confirming that Poland has discussed joining the 'nuclear sharing' program, under which the US has deployed nuclear bombs to several non-nuclear NATO countries.
The State Department was quick to react, saying Washington has "no plans" to deliver such weapons to any NATO member that joined after 1997, and deputy spokesman Vedant Patel insisted he was not aware of any discussion with Poland on the subject.
"The president did not say that Poland is having talks, only that there were. And it is true, such talks did take place. They were in the so-called conceptual phase, that is, Poland is interested in participating in the Nuclear Sharing program, and in some moment notified the US side," Kumoch, head of the president's International Policy Office, told Polsat.
"We are very interested in deploying NATO forces in Poland and participating in the Nuclear Sharing program," he stressed.
Kumoch regretted that Patel mentioned the year 1997, when the Founding Act between NATO and Russia was signed. The treaty prohibited the permanent deployment of troops in Eastern Europe, something Russia insisted on again last year, among other demands, in a security proposal that the United States and NATO ended up rejecting.
"We believe, and the president spoke about it at the NATO summit, that this act is dead. Russia simply nullified it with its aggression against Ukraine," the senior official said.
Currently, NATO member states Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey harbor US nuclear weapons.
The US began deploying its nuclear weapons in Europe in the 1960s. Ending this program was on the list of security demands that Moscow presented to the US and NATO in December 2021, and which were rejected in January.
