Sometimes even lionesses can grow a mane if there is a hormone malfunction from a large amount of testosterone!
So, scientists have suggested that Tsavo lions do not grow a mane because of either an overabundance of testosterone or a lack of it - these two extremes just might affect the thickness of the coat.
