Kaparot is a traditional Jewish ritual performed right before Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. But despite how it’s practiced in some communities today, the ritual is not scripturally mandated. It’s a custom, not Torah law.

In this ritual, practitioners recite a prayer to symbolically transfer their sins onto a live chicken. These are often five-week-old birds, crammed into crates without food or water for days. After the prayer, the chickens are handed over to kosher butchers for slaughter.
