How to use authentic resources when preparing for exams? 🤔
The last post was about some good resources which can be used in case you want to improve your language skills (academic English, particularly).
I use them for my students who are going to take the exams. And I'd like to share some tips on how I use them.
1️⃣ They write a lot of essays. I choose cards with topics which are more likely to be on the exam. If a student has problems with some particular exam topics, I give preference to them.
2️⃣ Sometimes they can struggle with coming up with ideas. That's why I post some links with articles on the same topic. Students can find there:
- well-developed ideas
- good vocabulary
3️⃣ Also I prepare a table for my students so that they can post their ideas and useful vocab.
And voilà, my students are ready to write great essays and able to understand advanced English ✍️

According to my experience, a lot of candidates struggle with writing. And even if you have a high level (C1-C2), it doesn't guarantee that you can get 7+ in IELTS or high scores in FCE/CAE.
Why? Because high level writing is not only about grammar and vocabulary but also about structure, coherence and cohesion, and other writing techniques.
That's why I'd like to start a series of posts with an overview of essays ✍
I gave this card to one of my students who ordered my writing overview.
Some educationalists think that international exchange visits will benefit teenagers at the school. To what extent do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
And here is one paragraph from this essay:
Another benefit, that is quite often overseen, is that in this programs teenagers are learning to be more self-sufficient. They learn how to do laundry, keep their clothes clean and use money wisely. Many parents notice that when their children return, they demonstrate more responsible behaviour than before.
I left a comment that it's absolutely irrelevant here ❌
It was said in the task that you should write about benefits at school. Yet, this paragraph is about house choires.
When you brainstorm ideas, be very careful 🧐
You can come up with some nice ideas but not all of them can be relevant.

I have taught so many students that I understood one thing about writing. If students haven’t had any practice before, it can be quite difficult for them even to paraphrase the task.
I have a webinar where I’m talking about the ways you can paraphrase the task for your writing. And today I’d like to share an overview of one intro.
I gave this task (Writing Task 1, maps):
The maps illustrate an industrial area in Norbiton in the present day compared with plans for future development of the site.
The intro which was written:
The pictures of two diagrams of the manufacturing zone of the city of Norbiton present current and further conditions of this sector.
My comments:
1. industrial and manufacturing have different meanings
2. It’s quite difficult to read such an introduction with a lot of prepositions (the pictures of two diagrams of …). You can write something like that:
The maps show an industrial area of the city called Norbition. The first one represents its current state and the second illustrates what it is expected to look after a proposed development.
So, be very careful with synonyms! You can’t replace every single word.

Hey everyone! Today’s post will be about writing. I’d like to share one piece of writing which I assessed.
Read the task and the paragraph and try to think what is bad about it and share your ideas below.
Task: Many students find it harder to study at university or college than when they were at school.
What are the reasons for this?
What can be done to solve the issue?
1st paragraph:
The reasons of aforementioned problem are quite understandable. Firstly, the formats of education system at school and at university differ a lot. School students have a strict plan of their classes and they communicate only with limited number of people. While at university students face not only an absolutely new type of classes, a lecture, but also try to get used to a great number of people. Secondly, a university period is time of maturation, independence and consciousness. Many of students are simply not prepared enough and don’t have these qualities. Moreover, many of students try to combine work, personal life, extracurricular activities at the same time and very often they are not able to keep balance in all of that.
