Basically, I suggest making a new bottom bar written in PyQt with Flexible Grading features built-in (a very tiny bar that only shows button times and hides answer buttons).

Recently Arch Linux removed fcitx4 from the official repos and moved the packages to the AUR, so installing or updating fcitx4 now requires building it from source. That's inconvenient, so I updated our guide to recommend fcitx5 instead.

The last few days I worked hard preparing your New Years present. And now it's finally here.

This new site is AJATT's catalog of Japanese subtitles for anime, dramas, TV shows, and movies. Previously we only had a GitHub repository at https://github.com/Ajatt-Tools/kitsunekko-mirror/, but that required downloading the entire repo (several GiB), which is inconvenient. This site can be browsed online.

On each entry page, I left a wget command you can copy and use to download the folder.

Unlike some other subtitle catalogs, ours works without JavaScript. You can disable JavaScript and still use it. The site does include some JavaScript, but the code is free and trivial. We do not promote proprietary software. Our immersion learning toolset is completely free/libre.

I find it despicable that some language‑learning resources advertise nonfree software. It's like selling tobacco to kids at a school. AJATT does not support that. With our new subtitle catalog, you can find subtitle files without running nonfree software or relying on nonfree JavaScript.

impd — new package for Ubuntu

I'm excited to share that impd now provides a .deb package for Debian-based distributions. We finally solved the engineering challenge to deliver a native installer for Debian, Ubuntu, and other Debian-based distros.

It took us several years because until recently, I didn't know how to do this. Our README even asked for help packaging impd, but no one stepped up. So I spent time researching it myself and made it happen.

Transformers OCR is deprecated

Since 2022 and until now, transformers_ocr has been the main manga OCR app for AJATT. It's time to move on. Last week we published a new project, zala. Zala is a screenshot utility I intend to use as a dependency in our new manga OCR app. zala will handle screenshots, while the main app will perform OCR and integrate with Goldendict.

We replaced transformers_ocr for two reasons:

1) transformers_ocr lacks a built-in screenshot utility, so it had to support many external tools (maim, grim, gnome-screenshot, spectacle, etc.), different desktop environments, Xorg and Wayland, and various window managers.
2) Its architecture expected one component to run in the background while another sent commands to it via a pipe. That approach is brittle and often breaks.

Meet Lancet — AJATT's new OCR app for reading manga.

Lancet is the spiritual successor to transformers_ocr. It's an OCR app that uses PyTorch models to recognize Japanese text in images and works best with Goldendict‑ng or Rikaitan.

Like transformers_ocr, Lancet is simple to use. After installing Lancet, launch Goldendict and open a manga folder in nsxiv. Start Lancet and wait for the OCR model to load. Press the OCR shortcut (default Alt+O) to open the snipping window, then drag and hold the mouse to run OCR.

Lancet adds an icon to the system tray. Right‑click the icon for actions, including Preferences, where you can change the OCR shortcut.
