How do you feel about tools for understanding why certain code runs slowly on a VM -- for building mechanical sympathy?

Most modern software needs to target specific architecture/hardware to have reasonable performance with data caches, instruction caches, etc. etc. etc. This seems to defeat the whole purpose of software (hey, isn't it supposed to run anywhere???)

Reminds me of Todd Mytokowicz's "Producing wrong data without doing anything obviously wrong!"

The NYU AI School is a week-long in-person* winter school that prioritizes those from underserved communities who lack institutional resources in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML).
