How do you feel about tools for understanding why certain code runs slowly on a VM -- for building mechanical sympathy?

Most modern software needs to target specific architecture/hardware to have reasonable performance with data caches, instruction caches, etc. etc. etc. This seems to defeat the whole purpose of software (hey, isn't it supposed to run anywhere???)

Reminds me of Todd Mytokowicz's "Producing wrong data without doing anything obviously wrong!"

We are excited to announce that applications are open for the 3rd NYU AI School, a free winter school for early undergraduates:

The NYU AI School is a week-long in-person* winter school that prioritizes those from underserved communities who lack institutional resources in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). Participants will learn the basics of AI and ML from experts at Google, Princeton, NYU, Columbia, get hands-on experience applying it to images and text, and explore career paths in the field. We encourage students with and without a programming background to apply for the event!
