Salim weist allerdings zu Recht darauf hin, dass Erdöl ja nicht nur Energieträger ist, sondern auch Rohstoff für alles Mögliche, von Arzneimitteln über Schmierstoffe bis zu Kunststoffen. In geringerem Maße gilt das auch für Erdgas, Stichwort Helium.
Erdöl und Erdgas lassen sich also nur zum Teil durch andere Energieträger ersetzen.
