🇪🇷🇪🇹 Eritrea rejects Amnesty's Tigray war crimes allegations

Eritrea’s government has denied Amnesty International’s allegations that its soldiers committed war crimes and crimes against humanity in northern Ethiopia’s Tigray region despite a peace deal signed last November.

Eritrea’s Ministry of Information on 5 September said that Amnesty International’s allegations against the Eritrean Defence Forces “have no substance or merit”.

The ministry added that the report “suffered from its flawed methodology” and was “filled with disgusting lies and distortions that are a futile attempt to disparage the Eritrean people”.

The ministry also accused the rights group of trying to promote hate and incite a wedge between Eritrea and Ethiopia.

🇸🇩 Sudan's al-Burhan to discuss conflict with Eritrea leader

Sudan's military leader, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has visited Eritrea’s capital, Asmara, for an official meeting with President Isaias Afwerki.

An official statement said the two leaders would discuss bilateral issues, the situation in Sudan and matters of mutual interest, but did not give any more details.

Eritrea is the fourth country that Gen Burhan has visited since Sudan descended into conflict in April this year, after visits to South Sudan, Egypt and most recently Qatar.

On 2 September, he ordered the reopening of Sudan’s border crossings with Eritrea, a move he said would facilitate trade and movement of people between the two countries.

🇪🇷🇪🇹 Eritrea responds to Ethiopia PM's controversial Red Sea remark

Authorities in Eritrea said they would not be “drawn into” conversations about Ethiopia's access to the Red Sea following controversial comments from Addis Ababa.

While addressing lawmakers, Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said access to the Red Sea is "a matter of existence" for his country.

"The Red Sea and the Nile River define Ethiopia; They are the foundations for Ethiopia's development or its demise," Abiy said, in remarks some commentators said could cause friction with Eritrea.

Ethiopia became Africa’s largest landlocked country following Eritrea's secession from it in 1993. It has since depended on its tiny neighbor Djibouti for over 85% of its imports and exports.

A statement by Eritrea’s Ministry of Information said “discourses” about access to sea and related topics “floated in recent times” were “excessive” . It said the matter “has perplexed all concerned observers”.

🇪🇹🇪🇷 Ethiopia's Prime Minister seeks to allay Eritrea's fears of invasion

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said on Thursday he would not invade any nation, in comments aimed at quelling neighbouring countries' concerns that he might use force to secure access to a sea port.

Abiy told state media on October 13 that Ethiopia should assert what he called the landlocked nation's right to access the Red Sea as much as possible through peaceful means, raising tensions with regional governments and the spectre of a fresh conflict in the Horn of Africa.

Coastal Eritrea described recent commentary over the Red Sea as "excessive" and urged concerned parties not be provoked, without directly addressing Abiy's comments.

Both countries subsequently moved troops closer to their shared border, according to diplomats and humanitarians with knowledge of the movements, raising concerns of another conflict in a region already plagued by violence.

Mohamud, who was on a two-day visit to the Eritrean capital Asmara, said he had briefed Afwerki on the current sea access row.

Tensions were sparked at the beginning of last week after Ethiopia signed a deal with the self-declared republic of Somaliland.

🇪🇷 Eritrea admits military presence in border Badme and disputed territories, denies occupation

The government of Eritrea has finally publicized its intentions to control disputed areas on the Ethiopian border such as Badme, which have been a bone of contention since the 2000 Algiers Agreement.

A statement from the Eritrean embassy to the UK and Ireland issued on February 28, 2024, says the border areas have been under the control of Eritrean troops since the two-year northern Ethiopia conflict that ended in late 2022.

The Eritrean government maintains that Badme and other disputed territories on the northernmost tip of Ethiopia are Eritrean territory under the Algiers Agreement. The statement refers to them as “sovereign Eritrean territories that the TPLF had illegally occupied for two decades with impunity.”

🇪🇷 Eritrean Biniam Girmay sprinted to his third victory at this year's Tour de France as overall contender Primoz Roglic lost significant time after a late crash on stage 12.

Eritrean Girmay became the first black African to win a Tour de France stage with his opening win on stage three and also triumphed on stage eight.

Intermarche-Wanty rider Girmay, 24, beat Wout van Aert in a frantic bunch sprint in Villeneuve-sur-Lot, with Mark Cavendish originally finishing fifth before being relegated.

Tadej Pogacar retained the leader's yellow jersey and remains one minute six seconds ahead of Remco Evenepoel, with defending champion Jonas Vingegaard a further eight seconds behind.

"The green jersey gives me wings - I feel super fast. It's in the head. I've had my ups and downs in recent seasons but I changed things this year and it's working," Girmay said.

🇪🇷 The African Tour de France cyclist racking up historic wins

To his fans, he’s the “African king” - an international star and the first black African to win a Tour de France stage.

Biniam Girmay did that not only once but three times this year at road cycling's premier event. Barring an accident, the 24-year-old looks set to win the green jersey on Sunday - a prize awarded to the best sprinter over the gruelling three-week competition.

But Girmay's journey to the top has been riddled with obstacles - he has battled culture shocks, Europe's visa procedures and the loneliness of being thousands of miles away from his wife and young daughter.

Now, he is embracing his role as a hero in his home country - Eritrea - and an inspiration for cyclists across Africa as a whole.

Many believe Girmay's success will spark change in an overwhelmingly white sport - in this year's Tour de France he is the only black rider in the whole peloton of 176 riders.

Girmay - or Bini to his loved ones and fans - was born and raised in Eritrea, a small East African country with a population of around 3.7 million.

Cycling is one of Eritrea's most popular sports, a pastime picked up during decades of Italian colonial rule.
