๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐ŸŒ US begins its largest military exercise in East Africa

A US-led military exercise code-named "Justified Accord" begins in Kenya on Monday, with more than 20 nations taking part in what has been billed as the largest event of its kind in East Africa.

The 11-day exercise, which will end next Thursday, is aimed at increasing participating countriesโ€™ readiness for peacekeeping missions, crisis response and humanitarian assistance, according to state-owned Somali broadcaster SNTV and Kenyan media.

The US military said Justified Accord is its "largest exercise in East Africa".

The US has led similar exercises in East Africa in recent years as the region grapples with a deadly al-Shabab insurgency and other security challenges.

๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ฟ Africa's largest mosque opens in Algeria

Algeria's President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Sunday officially opened The Great Mosque of Algiers, the largest mosque in Africa.

It is also the third largest in the world, after the mosques in Saudi Arabia's Islamic holy cities of Mecca and Medina.

The massive mosque is spread across 70 acres and can hold up to 120,000 worshippers at one time.

It also has the world's tallest minaret, which is the tower used to project the Muslim call to prayer.

The mosque was constructed over seven years, costing more than $800m.

The mosque was a project of former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who stepped down in 2019 after his bid for a fifth term in office led to massive protests.

๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ณ Africa's debt to stay above pre-pandemic levels through 2025, UN official says

Africa's public debt will stay above pre-pandemic levels in 2024 and 2025, with many countries still at risk of falling into debt distress as they continue to struggle to service international loans, a U.N. official said.

Addressing a United Nations Commission for Africa (UNECA) conference in Victoria Falls, the agency's macroeconomics and governance director Adam Elhiraika said eight countries were in debt distress, while 13 were "expected to be at risk of debt distress".

"Debt will (stay) above the pre-pandemic level. This is huge," Elhiraika said, adding that the continent's debt-to-GDP ratio was 62.5% at the end of 2022.

This ratio doubled to 57% in the decade to 2020 and could rise 10 percentage points in the next five years if Africa's fiscal trajectory does not change, according to a recent International Monetary Fund report.

๐ŸŒ EAC bloc dismisses fake East African common currency

The secretariat of the East African Community (EAC) regional bloc has dismissed a post on X, which claimed that the bloc's member countries have launched a common regional currency.

The post had been shared on Sunday by a fake X account named "Government of East Africa".

The account said that the currency was called the East African Sheafra, a combination of the shilling of East Africa and Franc.

The account also shared an image of a fake banknote of the purported single currency.

The EAC secretariat dismissed the report of a unified regional currency late on Sunday, saying that the creation of a single East African currency "is still a work in progress".

"Kindly ignore any rumours circulating in social media on the unveiling of new banknotes for the region."

In 2013, EAC member countries set a target for a single currency by 2024.

๐ŸŒ New $1.3 bln energy fund for transmission links across Southern Africa

The Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) and investment advisers Climate Fund Managers on Tuesday launched a new $1.3 billion target fund to build high-voltage transmission lines linking countries in the region.

The Regional Transmission Infrastructure Financing Facility (RTIFF) starts with $20 million in commitments from SAPP, and aims for a first close of $500 million in 2025 in a bid to overcome a key obstacle constraining growth in an evolving energy sector.

Finance will be raised from public and private sector investors locally and internationally, a joint statement said.

Despite an abundance of energy sources in Africa, a lack of connections between countries has hampered integration and trade among SAPP's 12 members.

"RTIFF dismantles this by enabling the private sector to work alongside public sector utilities to roll out new transmission lines at scale," chairperson of the SAPP executive committee said.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฉ US court sides with Apple, Tesla, other tech companies over child labor in DR Congio

A federal appeals court on Tuesday refused to hold five major technology companies liable over their alleged support for the use of child labor in cobalt mining operations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

In a 3-0 decision, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia ruled in favor of Google parent Alphabet, Apple, Dell Technologies, Microsoft and Tesla, rejecting an appeal by former child miners and their representatives.

The
plaintiffs accused the five companies of joining suppliers in a "forced labor" venture by purchasing cobalt, which is used to make lithium-ion batteries that are widely used in electronics.

According to the complaint, the companies "deliberately obscured" their dependence on child labor, including many children pressured into work by hunger and extreme poverty, to ensure their growing need for the metal would be met.

๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Central African bloc lifts Gabon sanctions

The Economic Community of Central African States agreed to lift sanctions on Gabon on Saturday and reintegrate it into the regional bloc, six months after suspending its membership in response to a coup that ousted President Ali Bongo.

Member states made the decision at a meeting in neighbouring Equatorial Guinea, Gabon's Foreign Minister Regis Onanga Ndiaye said in a televised address late on Saturday.

There
was no statement from the bloc, but in a post on X Burundi's Foreign Minister Albert Shingiro confirmed an agreement to lift sanctions was reached at the meeting, which he had attended.

Soon after the August 30 coup, the bloc suspended Gabon's membership and its participation in all related activities - measures it said would remain in effect until the return of constitutional order.

๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท๐ŸŒ Putin addresses French president's concerns over Russian presence in Africa

Russian President Vladimir Putin said that heightened Russian influence in Africa has caused an "emotional reaction" in French President Emmanuel Macron.

โ€œI think there is some kind of resentment, but when we maintained direct contacts with him (Macron), we spoke quite openly on this topic,โ€ Putin said.

Putin also maintained that Russia did not "go into Africa and force France out," and that Macron's main problem was to do with Wagner being a Russian organisation.

โ€œItโ€™s probably more convenient to be offended by someone without seeing your own problems. Perhaps such an acute, rather emotional reaction on the part of the French President is also connected with what is happening in some African states,โ€ he added.

Putin said that he was not "inciting anyone" and was not setting anyone up against France.

Major internet disruption has been reported in various countries across Africa.

Widespread outages were reported on Thursday in countries including South Africa, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Benin, Ghana and Burkina Faso.

"There seems to be a pattern in the timing of the disruptions, impacting from the north to the south of Africa," said Cloudflare Radar, which provides information on internet connections.

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), which regulates the telecoms industry, said the outage was caused by damage to international undersea cables running along the West African coastline.

"The cuts occurred somewhere in Ivory Coast and Senegal, with an attendant disruption in Portugal," said NCC spokesman.

He added: "You can also have undersea earth slides - sections of seabed can become unstable, sending huge amounts of mud down a canyon or gulley."

๐ŸŒ African internet outage was caused by subsea cable break, MainOne says

West African data center and connectivity provider MainOne said on Friday that an internet outage that hit West and Central Africa earlier this week was caused by a break in its submarine cable system.

MainOne, which is owned by data center operator Equinix, said that an "external incident" resulted in a cut to its cable system in the Atlantic Ocean, offshore Ivory Coast along the coast of West Africa. It ruled out human activity as a cause.

The major internet outage affected West and Central Africa on Thursday, with operators of multiple subsea cables reporting failures.

"Our preliminary analysis would suggest some form of seismic activity on the seabed resulted in a break to the cable", MainOne said, adding it would obtain more data when the cable is retrieved during repair.

Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed security and economic cooperation with Mali's junta leader Assimi Goita by phone on Wednesday, both countries said, a day after Putin held a similar call with the junta leader in neighbouring Niger.

"We discussed bilateral issues, particularly the security and economic areas," Goita said. "We agreed to cooperate further in the fight against terrorism." The Kremlin confirmed.

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐ŸŒ China could drive Africa's renewable energy revolution, report says

China has a unique opportunity to drive forward an energy revolution in Africa, but it must first reverse nearly two decades of neglect of green power investments there, research from Boston University showed on Tuesday.

Beijing has emerged as the continent's biggest bilateral trading partner since the start of the century and has financed billions of dollars worth of large-scale infrastructure projects.

Three years ago, China's President Xi Jinping said the country would not build new coal-fired power projects abroad, pledging to deal with climate change by supporting the development of green and low-carbon energy.

Although Africa's green energy potential is one of the highest in the world, Chinese lending and investment has so far provided relatively little support for the continent's energy transition, according to a report from Boston University's Global Development Policy Center and the African Economic Research Consortium.

๐ŸŒ Tanzania, Rwanda, Zimbabwe join African recall of J&J cough syrup

Drug regulators in Tanzania, Rwanda and Zimbabwe have recalled a batch of Johnson & Johnson children's cough syrup as a precautionary measure after their Nigerian counterpart said laboratory tests found high levels of toxicity.

The countries join Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa in recalling the same batch of the syrup, which is used to treat coughs, hay fever and other allergic reactions in children. South Africa has also recalled an additional batch.

Laboratory tests on the syrup by Nigeria's health regulator showed a high level of diethylene glycol, which has been linked to the deaths of dozens of children in Gambia, Uzbekistan and Cameroon since 2022 in one of the world's worst waves of poisoning from oral medication.

Diethylene glycol is toxic to humans when consumed and can result in acute kidney failure.

๐ŸŒ Over 282 million suffered acute food insecurity in 2023 - Report

Over 282 million people in 59 countries and territories suffered acute food insecurity in 2023, according to the 2024 Global Report on Food Crisis. These numbers represent a 24 million increase in comparison to the previous year.
