๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ South African police investigate suspected murders in Cape Town

South African detectives are investigating three separate incidents in Cape Town's Khayelitsha township in which a total of eight people are believed to have been murdered early on Wednesday morning, police said.

South Africa has one of the highest murder rates in the world, with about 20,000 murders recorded every year out of a population of about 60 million.

"At around 06:00 (0400 GMT) police were summoned to a shooting incident in Ncumu Street where the bodies of four males and one female were discovered with gunshot wounds," the South African Police Service said in a statement.

Police said preliminary investigations suggested that the five deaths in Ncumu Street could be linked to two incidents hours before.
"At around 02:50 an adult male and his adult girlfriend were shot and killed in Feza Street... and shortly after that a 35-year-old male was shot and killed not far from the first scene," police added. Police have yet to give a motive for the killings but said the same suspects could be responsible.

According to campaign group Gun Free South Africa, on average 31 people are shot and killed every day in the country.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Support for South Africa's ANC near 40% weeks before election, Ipsos poll shows

Support for South Africa's governing African National Congress (ANC) has fallen to just over 40%, an Ipsos opinion poll showed, weeks before a general election that could usher in the biggest political change since the end of the apartheid era.

While the ANC is still on track to win the most votes on May 29, if it gets less than 50% support it would have to seek one or more coalition partners to govern the country, the first such alliance since the party swept to power under liberation hero Nelson Mandela 30 years ago.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Report holds Johannesburg authorities liable for deadly fire

A report released following an inquiry into a devastating fire in downtown Johannesburg has found the City of Johannesburg and its entities responsible for the tragic incident, which claimed the lives of 76 individuals. Conducted by retired Judge Sisi Khampepe, the inquiry revealed the City's "total disregard" for the building's dire condition, prompting recommendations for disciplinary action against the CEO of the Johannesburg Property Company, responsible for overseeing city buildings. Judge Khampepe further advocated for the demolition of the building and proposed the erection of a memorial plaque in honor of the victims, including children, who lost their lives in one of South Africa's worst disasters.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฑ 'Israel must be stopped' in Gaza, South Africa tells World Court

South Africa urged the U.N.'s top court on Thursday to order a halt to Israel's offensive on Rafah, saying attacks on the southern Gaza city "must be stopped" to ensure the survival of the Palestinian people.

South Africa's ambassador to the Netherlands, Vusimuzi Madonsela, asked judges to order Israel to "immediately, totally and unconditionally, withdraw the Israeli army from the entirety of the Gaza Strip."

The two days of hearings at the International Court of Justice, also known as the World Court, are part of a case brought by South Africa accusing Israel of genocide.

Israel, which has denounced South Africa's claim that it is violating the 1949 Genocide Convention as baseless, will respond in court on Friday.
Last week South Africa asked for additional emergency measures to protect Rafah, where more than a million Palestinians have been sheltering.

South Africa also asked the court to order Israel to allow unimpeded access to Gaza for U.N. officials, organisations providing humanitarian aid, journalists and investigators.

Israel's military campaign has killed tens of thousands of children and women, destroyed civilian infrastructure and starved the population, South Africa's legal team told the court.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Zuma says he will fight for his rights over South Africa election disqualification

South Africa's former president Jacob Zuma said that he will fight for his rights, after the country's top court ruled that he was not eligible to run for parliament in next week's election.

The constitutional court ruled on Monday that Zuma's 15-month jail sentence for contempt of court in 2021 disqualified him from standing in the May 29 vote, as the constitution prohibits anyone given a prison sentence of 12 months or longer from holding a parliamentary seat.

๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฆ South Africa elections: The African National Congress (ANC) has lost parliamentary majority and will need coalition partners to surpass 50 percent votes and form a government.

Nearly all the ballots have been counted in South Africa, but the ruling African National Congress (ANC) has received only 40.21 percent votes in Wednesdayโ€™s election, well short of a majority.

For the first time since the end of apartheid in 1994, the once-dominant party will need to make a deal with other parties to form a coalition government.

The Democratic Alliance (DA), the main opposition party, received the second-highest number of votes (21.78 percent) followed by the MK party (14.59 percent) and EFF (9.51 percent).

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) will announce the official results on Monday night at 6pm local time (16:00GMT).
