🇳🇬Canada and Nigeria target oil and gas methane emissions

Oil and gas producers Canada and Nigeria have become the latest countries to tackle the potent greenhouse gas methane with laws to rein in emissions in the fossil fuel energy sector.

The announcements came as the United States on Friday said it would expand its own rules to require oil and gas drillers to find and fix leaks of methane at all of the country's well sites.

Canada said its new rules would target a 75% cut in methane emissions from the oil and gas sector by 2030, including through a proposed monthly requirement for oil and gas companies to find and fix methane leaks in their infrastructure.

Nigeria, among the world's top 10 methane emitters, announced new rules for how to reduce emissions in its oil and gas industry. They include requirements for leak detection and repair, limits to flaring and controls on venting equipment.

🇫🇷 France to end military Operation Barkhane in Sahel

French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday announced that France was ending its Barkhane anti-jihadist mission in Africa, saying a new strategy would be worked out with African partners.

▪️France announced the start of Operation Barkhane in August 2014. The main goal was to prevent the spreading of radical Islamism in the region. The maximum number of French troops involved in the operation was 5,500.

▪️For more than eight years of its presence, the French contingent hasn't stopped the advance of extremism and further destabilization in the region. Tired of the ongoing war, the population accuses France of failing to stop the radical islamists' violence.

▪️Irritation among the local military-political elites led to coups d'etat in Mali and Burkina Faso.

▪️After the Malian authorities turned to the Russian Wagner's PMC for support, Paris stepped up the process of curtailing its contingent. The last French soldier left Malian territory on August 15.

As for the French military presence, it is planned to keep around 3,000 French soldiers in Burkina Faso, Chad and Niger. There are no immediate plans for cutting the grouping.
