Germany will receive its first supplies of pipeline natural gas from Algeria under a medium-term contract signed between a subsidiary of trader VNG AG and state-owned oil and gas firm Sonatrach, the companies said.

๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ท Algeria and Mauritania open border gate to boost trade

The presidents of Algeria and Mauritania opened on Thursday a gate at the border of the two north African countries to strengthen bilateral ties and boost trade.

The leaders have also agreed to set up a free trade zone and build a 847 kilometre road that will link the Algerian town of Tindouf to Mauritania's Ezouirat.

"Hotels, restaurants, taxi drivers and workers in the public sector and housing sectors are happy," residents told.

The agreement comes a few days after OPEC member Algeria announced it would invest $442 million in energy projects in Mali, Niger and Libya.

Algeria has also announced it will open four other free trade zones in 2024 with Mali, Niger, Tunisia and Libya.

Algeria, heavily dependent on oil and gas sales, is striving to diversify its economy.

๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ณ US blocked Algerian resolution pushing for a ceasefire in Gaza with third UN veto

The United States of America on Tuesday vetoed an Arab-backed and widely supported U.N. resolution demanding an immediate humanitarian cease-fire in the Gaza war.

The vote in the 15-member Security Council was 13-1 with the United Kingdom abstaining.

It was the third U.S. veto of a Security Council resolution demanding a cease-fire in Gaza and came a day after the United States circulated a rival resolution that would support a temporary cease-fire linked to the release of all hostages. It is unclear when and if the resolution will be put to vote.

U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said the United States understands the desire for urgent action but believes the resolution would โ€œnegatively impactโ€ sensitive negotiations on a hostage deal and a pause in fighting for at least six weeks.

๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ฟ Africa's largest mosque opens in Algeria

Algeria's President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Sunday officially opened The Great Mosque of Algiers, the largest mosque in Africa.

It is also the third largest in the world, after the mosques in Saudi Arabia's Islamic holy cities of Mecca and Medina.

The massive mosque is spread across 70 acres and can hold up to 120,000 worshippers at one time.

It also has the world's tallest minaret, which is the tower used to project the Muslim call to prayer.

The mosque was constructed over seven years, costing more than $800m.

The mosque was a project of former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who stepped down in 2019 after his bid for a fifth term in office led to massive protests.

๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฟ Algeria pledges to help Mozambique fight jihadists

The Algerian government has pledged to support Mozambique in the fight against kidnapping and the jihadist insurgency primarily affecting the northern province of Cabo Delgado.

The agreement comes after Mozambique President Filipe Nyusi's four-day visit to Algeria.

President Nyusi told journalists on Sunday that Algeria had "promised immediate support for the Local Force, the one that is fighting terrorism".

He added that the North African country would train their forces and send equipment to help them in their fight against jihadist groups.

The two countries have deep historical ties, as the first guerrillas for Mozambiqueโ€™s liberation war were trained in Algeria.

๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ฟ Algeria to boost energy production with new solar plants

Algeria, a major oil and gas exporter, has awarded contracts to local and international companies to develop two solar energy projects with a combined capacity of 3,000 MW.

In an effort to reduce its reliance on oil and gas, the North African country aims to reach a renewable capacity of 15,000 MW and produce 27% of its electricity from wind, solar and hydro by 2035.

Currently only 3% of its energy comes from these sources.

The companies developing the new power plants are required by the contracts to source at least 35% of their construction components in Algeria in order to promote local development.

๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Algeria condemns Moroccan plan to confiscate embassy

Algeria has condemned a plan by Morocco to confiscate the premises of the Algerian embassy in Rabat.

Algeria severed diplomatic relations with Morocco in 2021, accusing Rabat of supporting "terrorist groups" involved in starting wildfires in the country.

Since then there has been a reduced staff at the embassy led by a junior diplomat.

Last Friday, Morocco announced a decision to confiscate properties owned by Algeria including land, houses and offices in Rabat as part of an extension of the premises of its ministry of foreign affairs.

This has sparked anger in Algiers. "Morocco has entered a new phase in their provocative behaviour towards Algeria," Algeria's foreign ministry said.

The Algerian government vowed to respond to "this provocative behaviour with all the means deemed appropriate". It will explore "all legal avenues including within the United Nations to protect its interests".

๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ฟ Algerian opposition denounces 'unfair conditions' in upcoming election

Political challengers in Algeria are sounding the alarm over a presidential election scheduled for 7 September, which will see incumbent Abdelmadjid Tebboune seek a second term in office. It comes five years after he was elected in a vote widely rejected by the opposition.

Prominent opposition figure Louisa Hanoune, the leader of the Workers' Party, this week withdrew her candidacy, citing "unfair conditions". Her party will boycott the vote entirely.

Hanoune, who entered the race two months ago, denounced what she alleged were attempts to exclude her party from the race and prevent voters from choosing freely between parties.

In a press release, she stressed that democracy depends on respecting fundamental freedoms that allow people to voice their will. Hanoune, 70, stood in three presidential elections between 2004 and 2014.

During 2019 protests that culminated in President Abdelaziz Bouteflika's resignation, she was imprisoned on charges of conspiracy against the state and military. After spending approximately 10 months in detention, she was acquitted and released in May 2020.

๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ฟ France backs Moroccan autonomy plan for the Western Sahara

France recognises a plan for autonomy for the Western Sahara region under Moroccan sovereignty as the only way of resolving a long-running dispute over the territory, President Emmanuel Macron said in a letter on Tuesday.

The dispute, dating back to 1975, pits Morocco, which says the Western Sahara is its territory, against the Algeria-backed Polisario Front, which says it is an independent state.

France, as the former colonial power in the region, has walked a diplomatic tightrope between Rabat and Algiers on the issue. Most of France's Western allies already back Morocco's plan.

๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Algeria recalls ambassador after France backs Moroccan plan for Western Sahara

France has acknowledged Morocco's sovereignty over the disputed Western Sahara, marking a significant shift in its long-standing position. Meanwhile, the United Nations-mediated peace process remains at a standstill.

In a letter to Morocco's King Mohammed VI, President Macron stated, "For France, autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the framework within which this issue must be resolved."

Algeria said a few hours later that it is recalling its ambassador to France over Western Sahara rift.

"The Algerian diplomatic representation in France is now the responsibility of a charge d'affaires," the Algerian foreign ministry was quoted as saying by the official Algerian news agency APS.

The ministry denounced Macron's statement as a "step that no other French government had taken before."

๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ฟ Algeria arrests dozens over alleged election fraud ahead of September poll

The arrested people are suspected of being involved in "signature sales" for the upcoming presidential election set for 7 September.

The three candidates placed under judicial supervision were named as businesswoman Saida Neghza, former minister Belkacem Sahli, and a relatively unknown hopeful named Abdelhakim Hamadi.

While they are not under arrest, they will be required to regularly check in with the authorities until after the investigation is concluded.

"Sixty-eight defendants were placed in temporary detention, three were placed under judicial supervision, and six were released after hearings," the court said in a statement.

Last week, the attorney general at the Court of Algiers, Lotfi Boudjemaa, told state news agency APS that "more than 50 elected officials" admitted to having unlawfully received money to endorse presidential candidates.
