#17 Know Your World: East vs West Part 3

โ–ถ๏ธ East and West have some serious cultural differences that come to the surface in many situations of daily life. Check out these pictures originally made by a Chinese graphic designer living in Germany. For your convenience, the titles are translated to English and Uzbek.

Thereโ€™s a whole bunch of pictures, today letโ€™s look at five of them.
See Part 1 and Part 2.

#8 Short Film: Night On Earth โ€“ Paris

โ–ถ๏ธ Hereโ€™s one sequence of the movie โ€œNight on Earthโ€ from 1991. The movie is about weird, nocturnal (=in the night) encounters (=sb meeting sb) between taxi drivers and their customers in different cities.

๐Ÿ”ค The film is in ๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ทFrench with English subtitles.

#120 Our favourite mistakes: Grammar

โ–ถ๏ธ Please translate the following sentence:
Armiyaga borganingizda, vazn yo'qotishingiz mumkin.

โŒ Perhaps you think it is:
When you go to army you may lose your weight.

โœ… Well, it should be:
When you go to the army you may lose weight.

โ“Why?

โ—๏ธ Like the government, we can assume that there is only one army in one country. Thatโ€™s why we should use the definite article the before army.

โ—๏ธ Lose your weight sounds like youโ€™re losing all of it. That wouldnโ€™t be good. You can either lose some weight or just lose weight, without the determiner.

#82 Afandi Quiz: Cultural Misunderstanding

Todayโ€™s quiz is about a cultural misunderstanding in the following situation:

โ–ถ๏ธ Chris from ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฟNew Zealand has been living as an expat (=Westerner working in a non-Western country) in ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ตJapan for two years now. He used to work for an American company but recently joined a Japanese firm. His foreign friends warned him that it wouldnโ€™t be easy for him. His Japanese boss and colleagues seem kind to him and praise him when he works extra hours but he still doesnโ€™t feel like heโ€™s part of the team.
