What is Chris not getting about Japanese culture?
Ouch!
💡🇯🇵 Japanese work culture is quite peculiar (=strange in an interesting and surprising way). A lot of people are “salaryman” – someone who works many years for the same company, typically in an office, and devotes (=dedicate, give everything) even their free time to the company, including nights out (=going to bars or discos in the evening). The Japanese government tries to persuade people to leave the office at a normal time and take more days off but employees often feel ashamed and don’t want to seem lazy.

#121 Our favourite mistakes: Vocabulary
▶️ Please translate the following sentence:
Avval registratsiya qilishingiz kerak. Shu yo’l bilan kursga qatnashingiz mumkin.
❌ Perhaps you think it is:
First you should registrate. By this way you can attend to / join to the course.
✅ Well, it should be:
First you should register. In this way you can attend / join the course.
❓Why?
❗️ There is no such word as registrate. The noun is registration and the verb is register. Both are pronounced with [дж], not [г].
❗️ By this way is a non-existing mixture of by the way and in this way. The two phrases mean different things. By the way means darvoqe.
❗️ Both attend and join do not need any preposition.

#11 World Food: 🇺🇸🇬🇧 Mac & Cheese
▶️ This dish is British in origin but now considered a very American thing that came back to Britain as that. Make sure you get one thing right – macaroni is only one kind of pasta, i.e. short little tubes. Each shape has a different Italian name but we can call all of them pasta. Mac & Cheese is …
... made with:
Pasta, usually macaroni, and lots of cheese, usually cheddar cheese. Sometimes butter and milk make the dish more creamy.
... eaten with:
Nothing in particular, but a salad is good to balance out the fattiness of Mac & Cheese.
Healthy or not? 🔴
Easy to make? 🟢
Cheap enough? 🟡

This song is from ...
50-50!
💡 The style wasn’t so obvious but the language should have told you. Armenia was the right answer. Armenian language is nothing like other languages, only vaguely related to Georgian. To be from Romania it should have some Latin-origin words similar to French and possibly even English. If the song was from Iran you would have understood a lot of shared vocabulary. The language of Slovenia on the other hand is related to Russian.

#12 A Good Laugh: Bollywood
▶️ India’s “Bollywood” is not only the world’s largest movie industry by output, the name is also an interesting linguistic phenomenon called “portemanteau” – the combination of two words in one. Which two words? Bombay + Hollywood = Bollywood.
Enjoy some truly epic (=impressive and historical) moments of Bollywood.

#78 Travelogue UK: Metropolis with a heart
Big cities are bad enough for humans, but for animals they’re much worse, aside from rats and cockroaches perhaps. While London hasn’t quite been animals’ paradise, the city does pride itself for an inclusive history in which animals must have their rightful place:
Memorial Trough
“Be kind and merciful to all animals” – reads the inscription on a historic trough for horses. In previous centuries horses often suffered dehydration and diseases from drinking unclean water. So a certain kind and merciful David Benjamin is honoured for providing troughs with clean water.
War Memorial
“Animals in War: This monument is dedicated to all the animals that served and died alongside British and Allied Forces in wars and campaigns throughout time. They had no choice.” – now this is a bit controversial or not? There are countless human victims of the British and Allied Forces, but the only nation to apologise is Germany.
