#54 Travelogue UK: The London Underground

If you thought metro systems are more or less the same in the world you couldn’t be more wrong. Cities, just like people, have a character of their own, and what you find under the ground says a lot:

London is old
Dating back to 1863, London has the oldest metro system in the world, and that’s also what it feels like. The trains make a lot of noise, there is no mobile phone signal, some stations resemble labyrinths and sometimes there really is quite a gap between the train and the platform.

London is expensive
Ticket prices are steep. Prepare to pay $7 for a single journey, or more if you travel during rush hours. It’s easy to get into the system – just tap your credit card and save the shock for later.

London is weird
Some stations have truly amazing names, like Seven Sisters, Swiss Cottage, Elephant and Castle, Angel, East India, Barking, … Oh and did you know there was a London Underground Mosquito?

#29 YouTube Channel Recommendation: CNA

📊 English Level: Upper

🔤 Subtitles: Usually available

💬 Topics: News, society, food

💡 Content: CNA is a Singaporean news channel with a distinctly (=particularly, noticeably) Asian perspective on news. They have a lot of content about Singapore, Southeast Asia and China, and even a documentary about Uzbekistan. Despite some government propaganda (=advertising for the government, trying to influence people) on the channel – Singapore is a rich but not that free country – if you agree that the 21st century is the Asian century then CNA is a great source of news for you.

#11 Documentary: Mask-loving Koreans

▶️ Even before the pandemic face masks could be seen on the streets of urban East Asia, maybe as a way to fend off (=defend against) air pollution, hide a recent nose job (=plastic surgery on the nose) or just out of a sense of female vulnerability (=ability to get hurt easily). Corona has made mask-wearing permanent and few people can imagine ever taking them off again in public. Watch this video of a street survey in Korea, not for advice on how to deal with the pandemic but rather as a glimpse (=a short experience to help you understand sth) into a foreign culture.

❗️This video has subtitles for your learning benefit!
