#53 Travelogue UK: Price policy

In a highly developed, ‘late capitalist’ society the relationship between the value and the price of a product is not so simple. Maybe you thought a bottle of water costs more or less the same wherever and whenever. Not so in the developed world. Prepare to pay some hefty prices when …

... you really need it:
You’re travelling and you’re in a hurry to get a snack? Pay more for that at the airport or train station. Want a small bottle as you travel light? Pay more for the small bottle than the big bottle! Forgot to buy an adapter? Pay over ten times the actual cost to buy it at the airport. Park your car in the city centre? Pay big money or risk a big fine.

... you really want it:
Miniature Big Bens or Eiffel Towers are of course made in China and should be dirt cheap. But buy them in a touristy place because you want to show off or do your loved ones a favour and you’ll be ripped off.

---Vocab---
📍hefty = very large (used for amounts) 📍travel light = travel without a lot of luggage 📍adapter = a thing to fit a plug to another country’s socket 📍miniature = very little 📍dirt cheap = very cheap 📍touristy = full of tourists 📍rip sb off = make sb pay a price that is too high
Should businesses be allowed to rip people off like this?

#15 Movie Time: The Gods Must Be Crazy (1980)

▶️ Today’s movie is a comedy from 🇿🇦South Africa. Watch how wilderness (=big natural place) and civilisation clash (=be in conflict) in the most amusing way. Old but never too old to make you laugh!

Well done!

👍 This hand-held device is indeed designed to help you catch flies or other insects. You can remove them without touching or killing them.

👎 To cut vegetables it’s not sharp enough, to display holograms it’s not high-tech enough, and to dye flowers – who does that anyway?!
#18 Featured article: Languages and Climate

📍 Why do languages sound so different? Some of it apparently has to do with the natural environment where languages develop. Read this IELTS-like passage to find out how some scientists come to surprising conclusions.

#27 Tongue twister: Insane Insects

❗️Challenge yourself with this tongue twister:

▶️ A big black bug bit a little blue beetle but the little blue beetle bit the big black bug back.

Translation:
Katta qora kana kichik ko'k qo'ng'izni tishladi, lekin kichik ko'k qo'ng'iz katta qora kanani qaytarib tishladi.

❗️Pay attention to:

🔘 Pronunciation: /g/ and /k/ in the final position are sometimes hard to distinguish. Make sure you do!

#88 Our favourite mistakes: Grammar & Vocab

▶️ Please translate the following sentence:
Korona bo’p qoldim.

Perhaps you think it is:
I was corona.

Well, it should be:
I have corona. / I’ve got corona. / I got corona. / I caught corona.

Why?

❗️ You cannot translate bo’lmoq as be here. Maybe the logic works in Uzbek but when you think about it, how can a person be a virus or a disease?

❗️ The same applies to virus and grip (flu).

❗️ The Uzbek original sentence stresses the moment of infection which lies in the past. Therefore the past tense is used. In English you can translate this emphasis as got or caught.
