Sense impressions arrive through the body without thought, appearing completely unrelated until the spirit creates thoughts that consist entirely of relations. When perception and thought match, we recognize reality. The perceptions become meaningfully related, the thoughts appear to the senses, and this cognitive act reunites what our own constitution severed: the phenomenal surface and the essential being. Our body filters out the spiritual essence of the world, so the spirit must overcome bodily resistance to connect with what's spiritual. This connection happens through recognition and through developing abilities.
Perceptions without thinking offer only a disconnected dismembered corpse, a multitudinous array of sensory data. The body doesn't provide thoughts. Thought is spiritual, and we think not with the body but against it. Our body provides merely the surface of things devoid of essence. The brain doesn't produce thought. If thoughts came from what isn't thought, then thinking itself would be declaring itself not to be thinking.
Thinking transcends the dichotomy of subject and object, having created both categories. The eye as subject serves as the active organ of thinking, yet what it creates isn't subjective. It's a peculiarity of the modern body to filter out the spiritual dimension of existence, though this wasn't always so and serves as a prerequisite of freeness. The act of recognizing restores full reality. While materialists consider thought unreal, specimens fade and the species abides. This drives the naive realist to conceive non perceptible percepts, a contradiction that includes many would-be anthroposophists.
Our increasingly subjective slant, the luciferic influence, has made feeling and willing personal while thinking remained under the guidance of the spiritual world. This explains why it's dangerous to base community on feeling or will. It's wholesome to share the unconscious egotism with which we cling to our personal opinions, but a new kind of group soul arises when truths are seen by two or more people together. Through perceiving thinking as our own spiritual activity, we find ourselves as perceiving subjects already within a spiritual world. We discover that thinking relates to a spiritual perceptual world as the senses relate to the physical perceptual world, making it natural to expect that other elements of the spiritual perceptual world could be perceived too.
These considerations might seem to lack practical significance for current problems. The opposite holds true. The source of these problems is a particular manner of thinking and consciousness, and their solution lies in a different kind. The new way of thinking will lead to new practical results, but more importantly, we'll be cultivating a new style of thinking and investigating, thereby developing a new kind of humanity.

Hardening comes from the astral body curtailing the ether body, a process predominating in animals while in man the I curtails the astral allowing continuing suppleness, as animal forms first condense temporarily within the world man during typogenesis, then harden and reproduce independently during typostasis, and finally die out in typolysis. All earthly life is a unity with beings interdependent, so evolution like the formation of any organism proceeds from the whole to the part with creation myths telling of origin by separation rather than addition, and as the earth shows hardening, fixation, and cooling as signs of death, in direct proportion the first plant life unfolds with new higher life emerging from the fading body so the surrender of a lower form of existence makes possible the life of a higher one.

In his 1919 lecture on educational psychology, Rudolf Steiner directly confronts the foundational principle of modern philosophy. He declares that "Cogito ergo sum (I think therefore I am), is the greatest error that has been put at the summit of recent philosophy, for in the whole range of the Cogito there lies not the sum but the non sum. That is to say, as far as my knowledge reaches I do not exist, but there is only image".
Steiner's assertion rests on understanding thinking as fundamentally image-nature rather than existence. Mental pictures function as reflections, as mirror images, of pre-natal spiritual activity that the physical body receives and transforms through antipathy. Rather than proving present existence, thinking actually demonstrates our pre-birth reality: "For true knowledge this activity is a proof, because it is an image, of life before birth".
Where Descartes located proof of existence in isolated self-awareness, Steiner proposes a fundamentally relational understanding. A more accurate formulation would be: Pre-natal spiritual reality rays into me and is reflected back through antipathy as image; will radiates toward after-death reality through sympathy as seed; between these two poles flows the rhythm of my soul-life.
Or to put it more succinctly: I mirror the cosmos through antipathy (thinking) and sympathy (willing), therefore I am a rhythmic interplay between pre-natal and post-mortem spiritual realities.
Steiner emphasizes that consciousness proves not isolated selfhood but cosmic participation. As he states: "We are united with our experience with the cosmos. Just as we develop activities which have to be continued in the cosmos, so does the cosmos constantly develop with us the activity of antipathy and sympathy".
