Dr. Abram Hoffer was a medical doctor and psychiatrist who studied hallucinogens and their effects on the mind. While researching schizophrenia and thought disorders, he worked alongside Colonel Al Hubard conducting LSD and DMT experiments at the Hollywood Clinic in Vancouver, British Columbia. His published work "Schizophrenia: An Evolutionary Defense Against Severe Stress" proposed that thought disorders stem from toxic reactions produced by oxygenated adrenaline, also called adrenochrome. Through examining LSD tests performed on several thousand unwitting alcoholics during the 1950s, his paper "The Adrenochrome Hypothesis and Psychiatry" revealed something striking. The research showed that LSD itself was not generating the hallucinogenic effect. Rather, it triggered the body to produce more adrenochrome, which became the actual cause of the hallucinations. Hoffer found that when vitamin B3 or niacin becomes deficient, pellagra develops, though most people actually live with subclinical pellagra. This state brings psychosis, schizophrenia, delusions, and a disconnection from reality. The presentation suggests that MKUltra programs deliberately weaponized nutrition to keep populations in low-level psychotic states, making them easier to control and manipulate politically. Between 1953 and 1960, Hoffer and Dr. Osmond ran four to six double-blind controlled experiments in Saskatchewan with 2,500 chronic schizophrenic patients. When they added one gram of niacin or niacinamide three times daily to treatment, something remarkable happened. The natural recovery rate climbed from 35 percent to 75 percent. What made Hoffer's approach different was his focus on finding what actually caused the condition rather than just masking the symptoms. Food allergies and nutritional deficiencies kept appearing as the root problems behind anxiety, mood disorders, and schizophrenia. To test this theory, he fasted over 200 schizophrenic patients for four days using only water, then reintroduced foods one at a time. The results showed that 160 of those 200 patients had at least one food allergy. Understanding the distinction between deficiency and dependency became central to his work. Deficiency occurs when diet simply fails to meet normal needs, while dependency means a person requires nutrient levels that no diet alone can provide. When Linus Pauling published his findings in Science during 1968, he gave the field a name and definition. Orthomolecular medicine, as Pauling described it, uses correct molecules of natural products normally found in the body like vitamins, minerals, and enzymes to support how cells function. Hoffer believed nutrition deserved at least 20 percent of medical school curriculum.
