Stephen Talbott's "The Future Does Not Compute" argues that machines gather power from hidden places within consciousness while we gaze into screens largely unaware of the influences passing through interface. The internet disperses the self beyond recall, demanding recollection in presence of artifacts or humanity faces no viable future. The machine within humans finds external expression where computers embody limitations without awareness, becoming threats we barely recognize. Human ideals survive only through moral effort overcoming alienation through contemplation of nature and its forms.
