Theory is way of communicating without language. Provides a procedure - makes a diagram - for understanding relationships. Relationships involve "space" in a fundamental way. Allows for the other aspects.

"The theory surprises me, and I haven’t fully appreciated it yet. It’s a way of communicating without using words, expressing relationships without relying on the treacherous use of language. I’m not saying that language isn’t a way to convey meaning, but it can cause confusion when trying to analyze something if you depend solely on words. The universality of the theory is such that it doesn’t matter what subject you’re discussing—it provides the same clarity. For instance, distinctions like mind and matter, thought and feeling, or psyche as soul versus psyche as mental are often confusions of words. When thinking of an object, as soon as you try to talk about it, you separate the object from the thought of the object, saying that the thought is a representation of the object. This creates confusion because how do we know they are two separate things? The theory offers a procedure that, for the sake of argument, uses diagrams, much like what science does by setting up a structured representation."

Arthur Young conceived of The Geometry of Meaning as an essay in philosophy, but philosophy in the older sense, encompassing the natural sciences, exploring the implications of science, and dealing with the relationship of the knower and the known. At the heart of this book is what he called the "Rosetta Stone of meaning," a diagram of relationships based upon the twelve measure formulae of modern physics, which he used to describe the interaction of mind with matter.

Young felt that the world as we know it could be elaborated into seven stages, which could be depicted as an arc. Process could be seen as a "fall" into the determinate constraint of matter followed by an ascent in which matter becomes free and indeterminate again. "The primary reality is this activity - which could be light, or it could be seeing, or it could be understanding -- not in knowledge, but understanding or recognition. It's behind all the world of manifestation, and it's a restoration, in effect, of the spiritual nature of things."

In 1973, after many fruitless attempts at engaging academics in dialogue, Arthur Young set up the Institute for the Study of Consciousness in Berkeley, California. "Since there were so many unexplained phenomena, like ESP, which did not fit into the current framework of knowledge and therefor remained undigested, it was time to prod people into thinking seriously about them. The main purpose for the foundation was to build a comprehensive theory in which ESP could be integrated into existing scientific knowledge."

In 1976 The Reflexive Universe and The Geometry of Meaning were published. These books attempt to identify valid universal first principals and correlate them with modern science. As well, they provide a holistic system for organizing the data of science and generating first order hypotheses for
scientific research.
