Holism and the Gurdjieff Work:
Henri Bortoft's Authentic Wholeness & J. G. Bennett's Systematics (2024)

by David Seamon

https://www.academia.edu/104600882/Holism_and_the_Gurdjieff_Work_Henri_Bortofts_Authentic_Wholeness_and_J_G_Bennetts_Systematics_2024_

Explore two complementary approaches to wholeness influenced by G. I. Gurdjieff’s system of self-transformation. The first approach is Henri Bortoft’s concept of authentic wholeness, which emphasizes understanding parts as integral to a larger whole through direct experiential contact. The second approach is J. G. Bennett’s systematics, which uses the qualitative significance of numbers to describe phenomena and emphasizes the interconnectedness of psychological, spiritual, and cosmological aspects. Seamon argues that Bortoft’s focus on understanding lays the groundwork for Bennett’s systematic method, which clarifies the wholeness inherent in the Gurdjieff Work. This holistic perspective is contrasted with more fragmented Western approaches and is shown to be applicable across various fields, from biology to architecture, reflecting a broader trend toward integrating science, philosophy, and spirituality.

The Form of Wholeness: Multiplicity and Unity
by Henri Bortoft

https://www.natureinstitute.org/article/henri-bortoft/the-form-of-wholeness

Henri Bortoft was renowned student of Goethean science and the wholeness in nature. In May 1999, Henri participated in a symposium at Teachers College, Columbia University, where he presented on “Goethean Science and the Wholeness of Nature.” Henri's work emphasized seeing nature as a dynamic, interconnected whole rather than as separate parts. He argued against the reductive approach of classifying nature by abstract commonalities and instead promoted understanding the intrinsic unity and diversity within natural phenomena. Goethe's method of perceiving the whole in the parts and recognizing the continuous metamorphosis of forms was central to Henri's teachings. This approach contrasts with the static thinking of traditional science, advocating instead for a dynamic, participant mode of consciousness. Henri's insights into "multiplicity in unity" highlight the concrete, living unity of nature, which cannot be fully captured by conventional, sense-based thinking but can be experienced phenomenologically.

Timelapse Plant Growth Videos:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtsJ5m6C7dU

One aspect of engaging with the Goethean method involves rhythmic observation of a plant throughout its entire life and death cycle. By repeatedly observing, you can enter into resonance with the archetypal ur-phenomenon of the plant. You attune to and live through the entire lifecycle of the plant, forwards and backwards in a moment, perceiving the whole archetypal plant manifesting in each stage of development and metamorphosis.

If establishing a natural observation rhythm is challenging, these videos, though a poor substitute, can help you visualize and entrain yourself with the processes of expansion and contraction in the plant's morphology.

Dogma and Doubt by Ronald Brady
https://www.aetherforce.energy/dogma-and-doubt-by-ronald-h-brady/

"Dogma and Doubt" re-examines the theory of natural selection, highlighting criticisms around its tautological formulation and the defenders' reluctance to address these critiques substantively. Brady argues that the belief in natural selection, equated with "survival of the fittest," is often accepted without sufficient empirical evidence, leading to a dogmatic adherence that stifles scientific inquiry. He emphasizes the need for clear empirical testing and warns against the dangers of uncritically accepted theories, suggesting that the current debate has significant implications for the future of scientific methodology.

Professor Eric Laithwaite: Magnetic River 1975
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OI_HFnNTfyU

The wonders of magnetism and the linear motor are captured in this 1975 presentation by Professor Eric Laithwaite (1921-1997) former Professor of Heavy Electrical Engineering at Imperial College London.

The lecture delves into the potential of magnetic levitation (maglev) for trains, highlighting the need for stabilization to prevent sideways motion. Ring magnets demonstrate this principle, though they offer limited clearance and stability. The speaker also explains the creation of electromagnets by passing current through a coil of wire, emphasizing that their strength increases with an iron core. When powered by alternating current, electromagnets can lift non-magnetic materials like aluminum rings, illustrating the concept of a traveling magnetic field. This effect is further demonstrated with coils arranged in a linear motor, capable of propelling and lifting objects. The lecture concludes with a demonstration of a model vehicle achieving speeds equivalent to 250 miles per hour, hinting at the future possibilities of maglev technology for passenger transport.

Professor Eric Laithwaite: Shaping Things to Come - 1972
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5mA4l6xmGs

Professor Eric Laithwaite (1921-1997) of Imperial College London shows how a consideration of shape and size has had a profound effect on the design of electro-magnetic machines.

A fascinating journey through the evolution of electric motors, starting with Michael Faraday's disc dynamo in the 1830s. Initially, these motors had bulky and inefficient magnetic designs. Over time, though, engineers realized that optimizing the shape could lead to significant improvements. The speaker then delves into the exciting potential of linear motors and magnetic levitation, showcasing experiments where objects are propelled and levitated without any physical contact. These breakthroughs point towards future high-speed transport systems using transverse flux motors.
