"With every act of setting electromagnetic energies in motion we interfere with the entire levity-gravity balance of our planet by turning part of the earths coherent substance into cosmic dust .... generating electricity speeds up the process of cosmic aging." - Ernst Lehrs - Man or Matter
ETHER DOES NOT MEAN RAREFIED SUBSTANCE

"We have, on the one hand, our world as it is generally observed; and we have in addition, the materialistic superstition that, for instance, if we gaze upwards, we see the Sun, a ball of gas, as it is described in books. This is nonsense. The Sun is not a ball of gas; but in that place where the Sun is, there is something less than empty space — a sucking, absorbing body, in fact, while all around it is that which exerts pressure. Consequently in that which comes to us from the Sun we have not to do with anything constituting a product of combustion in the Sun; but all that has been transmitted to the Sun from the Universe is rayed back.

Where the Sun is, is emptier than empty space. This can be said of all parts of the Universe where we find Ether. For this reason it is so difficult for the physicist to speak of Ether, for he thinks that Ether is also matter, though more rarefied than ordinary matter. Materialism is still very busy with this perpetual ‘rarefying’, both the materialism of natural science as well as the materialism of Theosophy. It distinguishes first, dense matter; then etheric matter — more rarefied; then astral matter — still more rarefied; and then there is the ‘mental’ and I do not know what else — always more and more rarefied!

The only difference (in this theory of rarefying) between the two forms of materialism is that the one recognises more degrees of rarefaction than the other. But in the transition from ponderable matter to Ether we have nothing to do with rarefaction. Anyone who believes that in Ether we have to do merely with a ‘rarefying’ process is like a man who says: ‘I have here a purse full of money; I repeatedly take from it and the money becomes less and less. I take away still more till at last none remains.’ Nothing is left — but yet he can go on! The ‘nothing’ can become less still; for if he gets into debt, his money becomes less than nothing. In the same way not only does matter become empty space, but it becomes negative, less than nothing — emptier than emptiness; it assumes a ‘sucking’ nature. Ether is sucking, absorbing. Matter presses. Ether absorbs. The Sun is an absorbing, sucking ball, and wherever Ether is present we have this absorbent force.

Here we step over into the other side, the other aspect of three-dimensional space — we pass from pressure to suction. That which immediately surrounds us in this world, that of which we are constituted as physical man and ether man, is both pressing and sucking or absorbing. We are a combination of both; whereas the Sun possesses the power of suction only, being nothing but ether, nothing but suction. It is the undulating wave of pressure and suction, ponderable matter and ether, that forms in its alternation a living organisation. And the living organism continually breathes in the astral; the breathing expresses itself through the Moon's motion or nutation. And here we begin to divine a second member or principle of the world's construction; the one member — pressure and suction, physical and etheric; the other, the second — astral. The astral is neither physical nor etheric but is continually inhaled and exhaled; and the nutation demonstrates this process."
Overview of the Levin Lab

"Seeking general principles of life-as-it-can-be, we use a wide range of natural animal models as well as create novel synthetic and chimeric life forms. A driving principle is the search for unification: invariant, scale-free principles for intelligence behavior in unfamiliar guises. We are interested in the physics of sentience, and the sentience of physics. We study cells, and cell groups as a collective intelligence, navigating diverse problem spaces such as transcriptional, physiological, and anatomical morphospace. We characterize and model the various competencies of this process, including its evolutionary origins and the implications it has for the evolutionary process itself. Much of our focus is on the control of anatomical growth and form, but we also study decision-making and problem-solving in transcriptional and protein pathways and physiological circuits. We want to understand the robust reliability of default morphogenesis, and the behavior-shaping interfaces that evolution exploits in groups of cells to enable them to create functional novel forms that were never directly evolved. Our work lives at the intersection of a number of disciplines, including developmental biology, artificial life, bioengineering, synthetic morphology, and cognitive science.

Dynamics of Information Processing in Biological Structures
Biological information comes in (at least) 2 flavors: spatial information (3-dimensional structure or topology of tissues, organs, and whole organisms), and temporal information (perceived patterns within environmental stimuli that occur in time). Both of these kinds of information need to be detected, remembered, and processed by cells and tissues to guide their function. Our lab uses a convergence of molecular biophysics and computational modeling to understand how this occurs at multiple levels of organization. The results of this effort will not only shed light on the fundamental nature of real living creatures but also will provide important clues to the capabilities of "life-as-it-could-be" in synthetic biology or hybrid cybernetic systems. The former ties our work to the biomedicine of birth defects, traumatic injury, and cancer. The latter has implications for the design of artificial life and the engineering of robust, adaptive devices and novel computational media. Altogether, we view this as a branch of information or computer science as much as it is biology.

We work on novel ways to understand and control complex pattern formation. We are especially interested in top-down controls, that exploit the native competencies of cells and tissues to make changes via communication and training strategies, not micromanagement of cells and molecular pathways. We use techniques of molecular genetics, biophysics, and computational modeling to address large-scale control of growth and form. For this purpose, we work in whole frogs and flatworms, and sometimes zebrafish and human tissues in culture. Our projects span regeneration, embryogenesis, cancer, and learning plasticity - all examples of how cellular networks process information. In all of these efforts, our goal is not only to understand the molecular mechanisms necessary for morphogenesis, but also to uncover and exploit the cooperative signaling dynamics that enable complex bodies to build and remodel themselves toward a correct structure. Our major goal is to understand how individual cell behaviors are orchestrated towards appropriate large-scale outcomes despite unpredictable environmental perturbations.
Michael Levin | General Themes of the Levin Lab's Research

We study bioelectrical signals that make up part of the language by which cells communicate to serve the patterning needs of the host organism. These natural voltage gradients exist in all cells (not just neurons), and regulate cell behavior and gene expression. We have developed new molecular tools to track and manipulate these biophysical conversations between cells and tissues in vivo. The results have yielded important findings about basic patterning, as well as new strategies to induce regenerative repair and reprogram tissues into new organs.

We have projects in development, regeneration, and cancer, as well as in the plasticity of the brain and its connection to somatic tissues. These fields are treated as distinct by most labs, funding bodies, and educational programs, but we span them because we are seeking the most fundamental aspects of biological regulation, and we hypothesize that common rules of information processing might be discovered throughout these aspects of biology. While our work will eventually give rise to practical applications in bioengineering and biomedicine, we are fundamentally interested in synthetic biology and artificial life - the understanding of living systems as cohesive, computational entities that store and process information about their shape and their environment.

We complement reductive analysis of molecular components with a synthesis designed to understand top-down controls and large-scale properties. For example, we analyze morphogenetic systems as primitive cognitive agents that manipulate information about their shape and make decisions about pattern regulation. We use techniques of artificial intelligence and neuroscience to find out what information biological tissues have, and how it is stored, processed, and communicated. Our focus on algorithmic (constructivist) computer models of patterning is an important component of linking genetic networks to complex 3-dimensional shape and its regulation in vivo. By building models of morphogenesis as navigation of an anatomical option space, we uncover the policies that cellular collectives use to navigate this space and begin to develop interventions (stimuli, not hardware rewiring) to guide them to desired regions of the space without micromanagement.

We make novel living systems (such as Xenobots), and use them as a model to understand the origin of the targeting information: how do collectives of cells, implementing a target morphology (setpoint for anatomical homeostasis) know what to make? Where do these morphogenetic specs come from? Using these synthetic living constructs, we attempt to understand how evolution builds problem-solving machines that exploit a number of "free lunch" affordances from physics, computation, etc. to produce adaptive solutions to novel environmental challenges (creative exploration of the morphospace that does not require multiple generations of selection).

Beyond Growth and Form: morphogenesis as a gateway to diverse intelligence ...
All intelligences are collective intelligences - made of parts; indeed, biological intelligences are (currently) far beyond any engineered artifact because living parts themselves used to be independent organisms. Life uses a multi-scale competency architecture where each layer, from molecular interactions to whole colonies, are solving problems in diverse spaces. Indeed, the problem-solving capacities of morphogenesis are just one type of intelligence, as per William James' definition: "ability to reach the same ends by different means". Thus, we are branching out from the collective decision-making of cells during construction and repair of bodies, to study how this process works more broadly. We are working on uncovering hidden competencies of gene-regulatory networks (and more broadly, chemical pathways) and a wide range of neural and non-neural constructs. We are attempting to use the lessons we gain from understanding this multiscale nesting of goal-directed agents to design new kinds of artificial intelligence. The goal is not to anthropomorphize physical systems but rather to provide a naturalized, continuous view of cognition across its spectrum by approaches grounded in developmental biology and evolution. All of this work is being synthesized towards a framework for understanding and relating to (whether by communication or control) truly diverse intelligences - a project that has implications not only for evolutionary biology and someday perhaps, exobiology, but also for development of ethical/social frameworks that will become essential in the future as the forms of agents around us diversify far beyond what is currently imaginable."

- What Bioelectricity Outside the Brain Means for Understanding our Multiscale Nature

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p4Fm7jLNrpg

"Each of us takes a remarkable journey from physics to mind: we start as a blob of chemicals in an unfertilized quiescent oocyte and becomes a complex, metacognitive human being. The continuous process of transformation and emergence that we see in developmental biology reminds us that we are true collective intelligences – composed of cells which used to be individual organisms themselves. In this talk, I will describe our work on understanding how the competencies of single cells are harnessed to solve problems in anatomical space, and how evolution pivoted this scaling of intelligence into the familiar forms of cognition in the nervous system. We will talk about diverse intelligence in novel embodiments, the scaling of the cognitive light cone of all beings, and the role of developmental bioelectricity as a cognitive glue and as the interface by which mind controls matter in the body. I will also show a new synthetic life form, and discuss what it means for bioengineering and ethics of human relationships to the wider world of possible beings. We will discuss the implications of these ideas for understanding evolution, and the applications we have developed in birth defects, cancer, and traumatic injury repair. By merging deep ideas from developmental biophysics, computer science, and cognitive science, we not only get a new perspective on fundamental questions of life and mind, but also new roadmaps in regenerative medicine, biorobotics, and AI."

"Life was solving problems in metabolic, genetic, physiological, and anatomical spaces long before brains and nervous systems appeared. In this talk, I will describe remarkable capabilities of cell groups as they create, repair, and remodel complex anatomies. Anatomical homeostasis reveals that groups of cells are collective intelligences; their cognitive medium is the same as that of the human mind: electrical signals propagating in cell networks. I will explain non-neural bioelectricity and the tools we use to track the basal cognition of cells and tissues and control their function for applications in regenerative medicine. I will conclude with a discussion of our framework based on evolutionary scaling of intelligence by pivoting conserved mechanisms that allow agents, whether designed or evolved, to navigate complex problem spaces."

"Birth defects, traumatic injury, and carcinogenic departures from normal morphogenesis - all of these problems could be solved if we gained rational control over the large-scale structures that cells build. The future of regenerative medicine depends on mastering not only the mechanisms necessary for cells to cooperate toward specific anatomical outcomes, but also the algorithms that are sufficient for cellular collectives to solve problems in morphospace. Our lab has identified bioelectric networks (in all cells, not just neurons) as a powerful computational medium that regulates gene expression, cell behavior, and anatomical outcomes. By developing tools to read and write patterns of resting potentials in tissues, we have begun to identify triggers of complex patterning subroutines that create entire organs (such as eyes), trigger regenerative repair (of limbs and spinal cords), and normalize cancer. In this talk, I will first describe important gaps in fundamental knowledge that remain despite progress in molecular genetics and stem cell biology. I will then introduce the tools and main ideas of developmental bioelectricity, and discuss recent results that enable computational modeling of bioelectrically-mediated dynamics to lead to discovery of effective therapeutic agents (blends of ion channel-targeting drugs). I will conclude with a vision of a possible future in which regenerative medicine is strongly advanced by ideas from cognitive science and computer science that complement the hardware-level rewiring of pathways with development of strategies to manipulate the collective intelligence of cellular swarms."

BOOK: The Relationship of the Diverse Branches of Natural Science to Astronomy (Third Science Course) - Lecture Cycle Stuttgart 1921 Lecture XVII, Stuttgart, January 17, 1921

KEYWORDS: astronomy, Tychonic

"It was not by any means my prime intention to let these lectures culminate in this way. I am not pre-disposed on principle to put forward things out of keeping with the accepted notions. We only want to get at the truth. As it is however, the assumptions of the modern astronomical world-picture involves so many contradictions that in the end, having studied the current astronomy, one comes away dissatisfied. Hypothetically, it begins by assuming the world-picture I have also indicated in this sketch (Figure 4), - the elliptic orbits of the planets, the Sun in one focus, and so on. The planetary orbits are then assumed to be in different planes, inclined to one another. For there is no alternative at this stage; the different inclinations are given by the perspective. The complications of it are complications of perspective. Yet the real calculations are not done to the basis of this simple solar system which people have explained to them at school and then retain for life. In practice, they take their start from the Tychonic system. Then one correction after another has to be applied. From the accepted formulae, one calculates, say, the position of the Sun at given time, and it does not come true. Instead of the real Sun being there, it will be the Dynamical of Astronomical Mean Sun, - something fictitious therefore. So it is time and again: Imagined entities are there, and more corrections must be introduced to get to what is real. In these corrections there lies hidden that which would lead to the truth. Instead of holding fast to the conventional formulae and being led to fictitious entities, one should bring movement into the formulae themselves - make them inherently mobile - and then draw curves accordingly. If one did so, one would soon reach the system here drawn, though I repeat, the drawings are diagrammatic."

BOOK: 126, Reincarnation and Karma
PAGE: 77 KEYWORDS: Copernican, superficial, Copernicanism,

And so I have to say something horrible: The Copernican view of the solar system that people now learn about was able to lodge in human souls because a superficial person could believe in this system. Superficiality is part of what it takes to be quickly convinced of Copernicanism. This is not to deny the great merit of Copernicanism or its significance as a first class cultural phenomenon. The intent is not to downplay the significance of Copernicus for humanity. Not at all, and yet it can be said that it is not necessary to be a very profound person in order to believe in Copernicanism, because it does not require developing oneself more inwardly, but rather outwardly. And it truly takes a high degree of superficiality on the part of the human mind to come up with statements as trivial as those found in modern monistic books, which state with a certain enthusiasm that the Earth we human beings inhabit is but a speck of dust in the cosmos compared to other bodies in the universe. This tirade is trivial for the simple reason that this speck of dust with all its details concerns human beings on Earth, while other things spread out in the cosmos and compared to Earth are of little concern to us. Human evolution had to take a totally outward and superficial direction in order to quickly become capable of accepting Copernicanism, so to speak.

One of the developments in which Ahriman's (a.k.a. Satan) impulse is clearly evident is the spread of the belief that the mechanistic, mathematical conceptions inaugurated by Galileo, Copernicus, and others, explain what is happening in the cosmos. That is why anthroposophical spiritual science lays stress upon the fact that spirit and soul must be discerned in the cosmos, not merely the mathematical, mechanistic laws put forward by Galileo and Copernicus as if the cosmos were some huge machine. It would augur success for Ahriman's temptings if people were to persist in merely calculating the revolutions of the heavenly bodies, in studying astro physics for the sole purpose of ascertaining the material composition of the planets--an achievement of which the modern world is so proud. But woe betide if the Copernicanism is not confronted by the knowledge that the cosmos is permeated by soul and spirit. It is this knowledge that Ahriman, in preparing his earthly incarnation, wants to withhold. He would like to keep people so obtuse that they can grasp only the mathematical aspect of astronomy. Therefore he tempts many people to carry into effect their repugnance to knowledge concerning soul and spirit in the cosmos.

BOOK: 1567, From Jesus to Christ
PAGE: 162 KEYWORDS: stable, modern science

You need only recall how many times in speaking of these questions, in one form or another, we have had to say that for quite clever people, who have all science and learning at their finger tips, the thought of Christ Jesus and the Events of Palestine are truly not compatible with the modern conception of the universe. In an apparently enlightened way they say that when men were not aware that the earth is a quite small heavenly body, they could believe that with the Cross of Golgotha a special new event took place on earth. But since Copernicus taught that the earth is a planet like others, can one still believe that Christ came to us from another planet? Why should we believe that the earth is so exceptionally situated as was formerly thought? A simile is then brought in: 'Since our conception of the universe has been so much enlarged, it seems as though one of the most important artistic presentations had taken place, not on the great stage of a capital city, but on the small stage of some provincial theater.' So that is how is looks to these people: the earth is such an insignificant little cosmic body that the Events of Palestine appear like the performance of a great cosmic drama on the stage of a small provincial theatre. We can no longer imagine such a thing, because the earth is so small in comparison with the great universe!

PAGE: 163 KEYWORDS: stable, modern science

It seems so clever when something like this is said, but after all there is not much cleverness in it, for Christianity never asserted what is here apparently contradicted. Christianity has never placed the beginning of the Christ-Impulse in the magnificent places of the earth. It has always seen a certain deep seriousness in the fact that the bearer of the Christ was born in a stable among poor shepherds. Not only the little earth, but a very obscure place on the earth, was sought out in Christian tradition to place the Christ therein. Christianity from the very first answered the questions of the clever people. But they have not understood the answers which Christianity itself has given, because they could no longer let the living force of the great majestic pictures work upon the soul.

People who talk of modern science as an absolute, complete in itself, might as well talk of a plant which is alive only in its up part. Everything connected with modern science has grown from myth; myth is its root. There are elemental spirits which observe these things from the other worlds and they howl with hell's own derision when today's mighty clever professors look down on the mythologies of old, and on all the media of ancient superstition, having not the least idea that they and all their cleverness have grown from those myths and that not a single justifiable idea they hold today would be tenable if it were not for those myths. Something else, too, causes those elemental spirits to howl with hell's own derision--and we can say hell's own, for it suits the ahrimanic powers very well to have occasion for such derision - and this is to see scientists believe that they now have the theories of Copernicus, they have Galileo's ideas, they have this splendiferous law of the conservation of energy and this will never change and will be the same for ever and ever. A short-sighted view! Myth relates to our ideas just as the scientific ideas of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries relate to what will be a few centuries later. They will be overcome just as myth has been overcome. Do you think people will think about the solar system in 2900 in the way people think about it today? It may be the academics' superstition, but it should never be a superstition held among anthroposophists.

BOOK: 1929, Spiritual Hierarchies & The Physical World

PAGE: 34 KEYWORDS: Copernicus, Kepler, and Galileo, astronomy,

The two streams--the spiritual and the materialistic--drifted further and further apart. In the Mysteries, the words that later come to denote the external heavenly bodies had always referred to supersensitive worlds, to a sequence of spiritual realms. The out world always understands the words to mean the material aspect, and this is true even of contemporary mythology--I use the word deliberately--we call astronomy. Spiritual science recognizes the full value of all mythologies. Thus, it also appreciates the worth of the mythology called modern astronomy which sees only space filled with physical cosmic bodies. This modern mythology is, for one who truly knows, merely a particular phase of all mythologies. A single thread runs through these mythologies from the ancient European sagas of the gods to the myths of the Greeks and Romans, the obscure myths of the Middle Ages, and the fully justified and admirable ones founded by Copernicus, Kepler, and Galileo. A time will come when people will say of modern mythology, "In the past, there were human beings who thought it correct to place the material Sun in the center of an ellipse and to rotate the planets in ellipses around it. They constructed a cosmic universal system even as earlier people had done before them. But, today, we know that it is all mere saga and legend." Indeed, a time will come when, no matter how much the old mythologies are now despised by the modern world, it will be considered absurd to speak of a Copernican mythology. To realize this will help us to understand how words have been interpreted so differently over the course of time.

The most intimate pupil of Saint Paul, Dionysius the Areopagite (Acts 17:34), clearly proclaimed in Athens that out in space there was not only matter, but that when the soul arose with inner awareness into the expanses of the universe, it would find spiritual beings who are above humanity in evolutionary development. Dionysius coined different terms from those used previously, for otherwise people would have thought that he referred only to material entities. When the Rishis spoke of spiritual hierarchies, their words expressed what Greek and Roman wisdom expressed in their ascending universe of Moon, Mercury, Mars, Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn. Dionysius, the pupil of Saint Paul, had in mind the same worlds the Rishis spoke of. Dionysius clearly wished to emphasize that he was referring to spiritual matters. So, he deliberately chose words he knew would be taken spiritually--that is, he spoke of Angels, Archangels, Archai, Powers, Mights, Dominions, Thrones, Cherubim, and Seraphim (Colossians 1:16). But people had completely forgotten what they once knew. If the connection between the terminology of Dionysius the Areopagite and the Rishis had been understood, one would have known that the "Moon" the Rishis referred to, and the "angelic realm" in other Mysteries, are one and the same thing. One might have heard the word Mercury on the one hand, and the word Archangel on the other, and would have known that they are one and the same. Archai and Venus refer to the same realm, as do Sun and Powers. On hearing the word Mars, one would have had the feeling of rising to the Mights. The word Dominions in the school of Dionysius corresponds to Jupiter, and the term Saturn to the Thrones. Ibid., Page 35

PAGE: 96 KEYWORDS: cosmos, astronomy, Ptolemaic

The Ptolemaic view, on the other hand, is not merely a physical system. It was derived from spiritual observation at a time when it was still known that the planets represented the boundaries of influence of higher beings.

To characterize the realms of influence of these higher beings, our planetary solar system must be drawn very differently. I will now draw this planetary system as it was made clear in the Mystery schools of Zoroaster.

We would then have to draw what served as the boundary of the Thrones' sphere of activity in immediate relation to the zodiac--that is, we must draw what made up the boundary of Saturn. After that, we must delimit the sphere of activity of those spiritual beings known as the Dominions, or Spirits of Wisdom--the outermost boundary of Jupiter. Next, we delimit the sphere of influence of the Mights, or Spirits of Movement. This is delineated by the boundary of Mars. We have seen that the battlefield left by the "War in Heaven" is between those two. (Page 97)

To differentiate correctly between the various realms of power, however, we must also draw the boundary line of the Sun. Just as Mars marks the outer boundary of the influence of the Mights, so the orbit of the Sun represents the frontier of the authority of the Powers or Spirits of Form. Here, then, is the boundary marked out by Venus that represents the sphere of influence of the Archai. Next, we come to the realm marked out by Mercury. This is the sphere of influence of the Archangels, the Fire Spirits. We are now coming quite close to the Earth. We reach the realm of influence bounded by the Moon. Therefore, here we must draw the Earth. (Page 98)
