The European Union is getting ready to regulate the digital assets sector and Europe’s MiCA crypto legislation moves a step closer.

Yesterday members of the European Council approved the text for the Markets in Crypto Assets Regulation (MiCA) framework taking a major step toward establishing rules for how digital asset exchanges and other service providers should operate in EU member states.

The laws are expected to come into force in early 2024 or later as the text must also be formally agreed to by lawmakers at the European Parliament.

MiCA introduces the first-ever licensing regime for crypto wallets and exchanges to operate across the EU and imposes reserve requirements on stablecoins. A separate law on funds transfers requires wallet providers to check their customer's identity to curb money laundering for several years.
