The Ottoman Timeline at a Glance

To truly understand the Ottoman story, we need to see the big picture first. Here are the four key periods that define the empire's 600-year history:

1. Rise (c. 1299-1453):

This is the beginning. A small principality, founded by Osman I, begins its incredible journey of expansion, transforming into a formidable state ready to conquer an empire.

2. Peak of Power (1453-1566):

The golden age! The capture of Constantinople in 1453 marked a new era. Under legendary sultans like Suleiman the Magnificent, the empire became a global superpower, shaping the political landscape of Europe, Asia, and Africa.

3. Stagnation & Decline (1566-1800s):

The empire faces a long, gradual decline. Internal challenges and powerful new rivals lead to a slowdown in expansion and a weakening of its central authority.

4. Reform & Dissolution (1800s-1922):

The final chapter. The empire attempts to modernize and reform its institutions but ultimately crumbles in the wake of World War I. This period marks the end of an era and the birth of new nations.

We'll be diving deep into each of these periods, one by one, starting with the very beginning.
To help you navigate our journey, here is a complete list of all the Ottoman Sultans, organized by the four key periods of the empire.
