NEEDHAM, Massachusetts
An underground electrical fire required Needham public safety officials to close off the town center for more than 2 hours Saturday morning as Eversource crews worked to determine the cause of the problem.
The FD received a report at 10:07 a.m. of smoke rising from manholes on Great Plain Ave in the area around the Town Common.
Fire and police responded to the scene and police blocked off all roads leading into the downtown at 6 locations.
They were re-opened just after 12:30 p.m. as Eversource continued to investigate what appeared to be the failure of underground cables which caused the smoke and prompted the response.
An Eversource spokesman said the utility had βmultiple crews on site responding to an underground issue.β

SAN BERNARDINO CO., California
Residents across the Victor Valley reported feeling shaking throughout Friday, Apr 24, as well as over the past several days, with many describing rattling windows, moving doors & vibrations strong enough to shake their homes.
The source of the shaking remains unconfirmed.
According to the USGS, data recorded on a seismic monitoring website shows a minor event labeled βM 1.1 Quarry Blast β 9 km NNW of Big Bear Lake, CA,β with a timestamp of Apr 24, 2026, at 16:39:56 & coordinates of 34.322Β°N, 116.933Β°W at a depth of -1.7 km.
The negative depth reading is consistent with surface-level activity such as quarry blasting rather than a natural earthquake.
Despite the recorded event, officials have not confirmed whether the shaking felt across the Victor Valley is directly connected to quarry operations, military activity, or experimental flight testing.
