On Purpose and Direction in Life

"The same goes for a person who wants to succeed; they shouldn’t navigate the sea of life aimlessly without a rudder, but must steer his ship boldly toward the port of his choice, not only when the sea is smooth and the winds and currents are in his favor, but he must hold steadfastly to his course and pursue the even tenor of his way when the storm-winds blow and the waves run high, though his ship be well-nigh hidden from view by the gathering clouds of adversity or the mists of opposition.

It is no easy task to live a life of aimless drifting, nor is it an easy task to steer one's course in a given direction; and that life which has no definite aim will surely be frittered away in idle and purposeless dreams.

"Busy idlers," "industrious do-nothings," "aimless chatterers," and "wooden philosophers" are found everywhere. A sound, definite goal is a sure cure for a thousand ills that beset the aimless life. Dissatisfaction and discontent fade away in the face of a clear objective.

Purpose takes the drudgery out of life, dispels doubt and uncertainty, and brightens the darkest day. That which we do with constancy and without murmuring, that which is done with a purpose, becomes a pleasure. And no work is well done, is not carried to a successful conclusion, unless it is done with a will; and it is this attitude that makes men's deeds immortal.

Men of the present day are rushing headlong in the face of the spirit of the times.

This age needs young people who can focus on one thing without losing their individuality or personality, men who will not become one-sided, narrow, or dwarfed in their specialty. Concentration upon some one purpose absorbs all other things in this world, and it cannot be replaced by education, by genius, by talent, by industry, by will power, or by anything else.

A college education, a head stuffed with miscellaneous knowledge, do little for those who can’t use them for a defined purpose.

"No man can serve two masters." Only one of our affections, only one of our purposes, can ever predominate; all others must be subordinated to it. A man may have secondary plans, but his main purpose will always be one, and the character of all the others will depend upon it. It is this great purpose that creates the meaning of life, it unites all our forces, binds them into a whole, supports and collects everything that was formally weak, separated and scattered."
