Today I woke up thinking about how much I appreciate my Dad.

If you were to look at my father’s life on a timeline, by modern standards it would be hard to believe he was ever real.

The man just worked.
He never got drunk, didn’t smoke, didn’t do drugs or gamble, he didn’t take any pills for his ‘mental health’ and he never complained about anything.

He rose at 4:30am, worked six days a week in construction and on Sundays (his only day off) he would take me to football and volunteer as goal umpire.

He never lost his temper with me, never beat me, never confided anything personal in me, never talked about himself or his own problems. I never saw him break down or struggle with anything.

To my knowledge he never committed a crime, never stole anything or accepted any government payments of any kind.

The man needed no validation, no special status or words of praise, it really seems like nothing he did was for himself. His motivation was always duty, to my mother, my sisters and me.

I’ll always strive to be like my Dad, the greatest man I’ve ever known who set the clearest example.

Allegorically, put modern man next to my Dad and it’d be a bearded-child having a drug-induced seizure on the ground next to a giant made of steel.
