Here's the real reason CERN got shut down.

Sidenote, this is literally my professional vocation. It's not that terrible, it only smellz

Tales from the paper mill: Calendar stacks are rollers that squish the paper to make it flat. Some of them have hydraulic shoes inside for zone diameter adjustments. Believe it or not, some have 7 or more zones across a 30ft width and you can pressurize them to make the shell expand out a few thousandths. There's also cooling water and oil for the bearings. There's a lot going on there. So every 6 or 8 months we swap the calendars out with a spare pair and send the old ones off to be ground and polished.

One day the stacks were swapped and the mechanic mixed up two hoses because they used the exact same fitting and gender. What he did was swap one oil line with one water line. Now the water leaving the stacks is connect to the oil return line. Since water is heavier than oil, that "returned water" went straight to the bottom of the 2000gallon hydraulic oil tank in the basement and eventually over flowed it out the top. Guys doing a walk around during warm up found oil overflowing out of that tank into the ditches in the basement.

Fortunately there was no damage to the bearings ANYWHERE on the machine. What a mess. The solution is to use unique connectors for each fitting.
