The Beheading of Saint John the Baptist was painted by Caravaggio in 1608 while he was in Malta. Commissioned by the Knights of Malta as an altarpiece, it is the largest painting he ever created and still hangs in St. John's Co-Cathedral. Although Caravaggio was briefly made a Knight of Malta, he was later imprisoned, escaped, and was expelled from the Order.
