Tales from the papermill: OK this one does not have anyone getting injured. I worked in gauging an instrumentation. There's a scanner that measures the weight and moisture of the sheet and makes changes via the DCS system. Those sensors have to be validated. So the operators will cut a sample at turn up, quickly bag it and run the to lab to weigh it. So they weigh it in grams, put in an oven for 4 hours and weigh it when it's dry. From there we can calculate the missing weight of water and thus the percentage of moisture. So the lab guy calls one of our guys one night and says the moisture came out negative. That can't be... the sample came out of the oven weighing more than when it went in. Turns out trout were running and the guys were cooking fish in the same oven used to dry the samples. All that fish oil was getting into the paper sample.
Adding to this one. We took over the maintenance gauging/instrumentation contract at union mill. First day on site, I go to the paper lab and ask the lab tech how they determine if paper is in / out of spec. He doesn't know but shows me the procedures he uses to weigh and measure moisture. I press him a little more... how do you know if the reading is out of spec? He says his supervisor tells him. Oh, ok, cool, where is your supervisor? He's off this week. So I look at him slyly and say "so we will not be making any off spec paper this week at all?" Yep... because if any of it was offspec he'd have to do additional tests.
Are you so deep into procedures that you don't understand what the hell you are doing? Are you doing something because that's the way it's always been done and you don't know why?
