Tales from the paper mill: At an unknown mill guys were going inside a stock tank. So confined space sniff was done and passed. The first guy stepped thru the hole and in about 30 seconds passed out. Another guy went in to get him. And a third. All succumbed. Turns out there was paper stock on the bottom of the tank and it had crusted over. First guy in the hole stepped thru the crust and allowed H2S to escape.

Don't assume that because a hole just got sniffed that it's safe 10 seconds later. Don't go in after your buddy without SCBA. Make sure you stage SCBA at the hole. Tie a rope on your buddy.

Carolina squat story for ya'll.... A couple years ago I drove my 20 year old chevy duramax farm truck to a mom and pop business to get some metal parts. The owner helped me carry stuff to my truck and we got to talking. Eventually one of his 18 year old employees came to ask boss man a question. Parked next to me was this seriously squatted truck. So I asked the kid if that was his truck. He started grinning and said yes. I asked him if he had some sort of invisible trailer holding the ass end down like that. The owner had a few comments as well. In short we gave that poor kid some good natured hell for a minute or two.

I got in my truck to leave and my truck had an issue with the fuel filter housing... a o-ring had cracked and when it was hot it would suck air into the injector pump. I hadn't diagnosed it yet. So I cranked up my truck and it died in 5 seconds. Now I got the hood up pumping the primer bulb and this kid walks up on me. He said "mister if your truck won't run, I think it'll fit on that invisible trailer I got".

I couldn't help but laugh.... and I deserved that comment. great kid.

They are pussyfooting here... if you are knocked out or simply trapped and unable to get out of the liquor, you are as good as dead in an hour. I doubt they will find any bodies. The emergency management and news media is saying 9 missing and two dead. The real sense of it is that 11 are dead.

Tales from the paper mill: International Paper Safety decided we needed to wear hiviz vests. They have one guy who's job is vibration tech at Georgetown. He goes to every bearing in the mill and uses a transducer to measure inner and outer race vibration. They do FFT frequency analysis on it and use it to predict bearing failures. One day he was on the 14th floor of the power house and set his tool bag down. As he stood up the hiviz vest pooched out and the arm hole got caught on a 1/4 turn condensate valve. As he stood up it opened and sprayed his ribs down with scalding steam. He couldn't get loose from it and it burned him pretty damn bad.

This is why you see breakaway hiviz vests with velco seams.

Also don't mount the valves so that the handle points down. See that sliding lock? it won't stop a valve from opening if it's down.
