Guys I've put together some stories about safety from my career. Hope you enjoy them. Hope they make you think about what you're doing and the consequences. Tales from teh paper mill. There was a very light duty rail cart in the basement that ran across the width of two paper machines and out to a loading dock. It's used to transport large rolls from machine floor to basement and then out to a loading dock. It is powered from a small portable generator that makes 240v to run a motor. The operator walks beside it with a pendant. Over the years the cord for the pendant has been run over and cut by the rail wheels and has been shortened to the point you must walk within a foot of the cart.

One of the operators showed a new female employee how to run it. He never thought to tell her not to put her foot beside a concrete dyke around a tank on the basement floor. The space was so narrow, no man would put his foot there, he'd step up on the top of the curb. So she got her foot crushed sideways.

This is a case of it's not THAT it works, it's what happens when something else goes wrong. That pendant lead was originaly long enough to keep our feet out of danger. But just fixing it meant it got so short that a careless employee got hurt.

THe other important part here is that when we show someone how to do a job we show them exactly that... do the job. We seldom tell them what NOT to do. The new guy needs to hear both things.

Tales from the paper mill: At IP Savannah they have a "lowerator". A combination elevator and conveyor to lower rolls of paper from the machine floor to the basement. It stopped working so E&I went to investigate. With two shift superintendents watching, the E&I guy got under it and tripped a photocell. The bed of the lowerator came down on him and crushed him. 15 minutes later they're calling his wife to tell her she's a widow.

What JSA? What lockout? Who needs that shit? His kids could sure use a few more weekends with him.
