Real men out in the woods... and roles in hte paper mill that don't exist any more. Back tenders used to measure moisture of the sheet by holding their arm near the finished roll and seeing static electricity pick up the hair on their arms.

When I started working in paper we had scanners that measured properties of the paper and fed control signals back to the mill equipment... ie bumping the basis weigh valve.

By the end of my career we had mass flow sensors on EVERYTHING... all inputs known, all transit times and pipe volumes known. The control system develops a model of all stock, retention aid, steam pressures, white water fines, etc... and calculates what the weight and moisture of the finished sheet will be. That model is the gospel but it does get nudged around by the scanners that used to control the machine directly. Today if the scanner isn't working, the model is probably 99% correct and we keep making paper without any losses.
