Jesus was referred to as a carpenter in the Gospel of Mark.

A 1st century carpenter was a lot different than today’s carpenter.

The Greek word used to describe Jesus’ trade was a "tekton."

A tekton is a skilled craftsman who works with wood and stone.

Like most craftsmen of His day, He likely apprenticed under His father Joseph, learning His trade at a young age.

According to 1st Century historical records, tektons built things like:

Tables and benches
Storage chests
Olive oil presses
Doors and door frames
Roof beams and supports

One day I was reading the first chapter of John and I came across this verse:

“All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.”
- John 1:3

As I pondered that verse, this thought struck me…

The same hands that crafted doors and benches on the dusty streets of Nazareth first shaped galaxies.

Think about that a second...

Because you gotta love the irony...

The village craftsman was actually the universe's Architect.

The Master Builder of the cosmos, who spoke galaxies into existence, chose to build furniture in a humble workshop in Nazareth….

The same hands that crafted doors and table legs also crafted the constellations.

But that’s not all He builds…

As John writes,

"In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind" (John 1:4).

This Christmas, may the divine Carpenter build something new in you.
